2017 paint jobs. Improved?
The 2015 and 2016 had hit and miss paint jobs.
My 2015 silver Z06 was a miss and it had some mottling on the sides needed a repaint job paid for by GM.
The 2014 Silver was not great either but a little better.
Well the other day I looked at a red 2017 Z06.
It had the best paint I have seen to date on a new Corvette.
It will interesting to see what the new paint shop brings on the 2018's.

It's the same paint facility for the '17's. I doubt that they did any improvements, especially with the new $450 million dollar facility coming on line. It's hit or miss like all other MY C7's.

I have a 2017 and its red and the paint is not that good. Quite a bit of ripple to it... but people don't notice when I'm driving it around and they are drooling

I had a white 2016- paint was good, red 2017 and it was really good, I have a 2018 Watkins Glen gray now and it is ok, some molting only on decklid drivers side but the rest is spot on. Orange peel on all that can be corrected out of course.
I think any metallic you pick is going to have that until the new shop is up and running. The non metallic paints seem to look ok.

No. It's just that the 17 you saw wasn't yours. So you haven't spent time with the paint to know WHERE it's not good lol.
listen, the car is a supercar in almost all aspects but unfortunately, the spare parts bin this car skims from now and again isn't like Porsche Audi Lambo VW... It's cruze, Impala and the like lol. Including the paint and method behind it. And the fiberglass/composite doesn't help either. The panels are what they are.
I'll put up with it because it is so insane in 99% everywhere else.
maybe we'll all get surprised when the real 18's start showing up not the 18's with 14 15 16 17 paint jobs!

I looked at it real close and it maybe still in the showroom.
Near zero orange peel and very high quality look compared.
I am not a red fan but this was nice compared to the worst I've seen was a black one I saw that looked like a real orange peel only black.
Only my 2009 ZR1 had a better finish. It had 0 orange peel.

Exactly! My 2016 has some OP, but they all do to some degree. My Audi's, Lexus had OP. The composite panels do pose a challenge regarding how the paint lays down, be it by robot or hand.
I doubt the new plant facility will eliminate OP all together. Just my opinion.

I picked up a '17 3LZ a few weeks ago. Long Beach Red/Spice. Overall I think the paint quality is good. I had a '13 which was also good. It is a Pre-Production car - VIN 00008 built in late July or early August '16 registering in MI 2nd week in August. It was assigned to to Warren, MI for 6 months. I can't imagine the early "evaluation" cars had any different paint process, but it really does look good (wet looking) and I've been all over it looking for runs and orange peel.
With 4,600 miles on it there are a few chips (actually really small chips compared to my '13 GS with 34k miles), but from a smoothness and gloss standpoint, it really looks amazing. Maybe part of that is the extra paint process involved with LBR - I'm not sure what that is, but for $995 I'm going to assume it was something extra. I'm debating a clear bra/wrap, but the closest to me that I'm told I can trust in 100 miles away. I hand wash and wax all my cars, and those driven in the winter get clay barred in the spring. The Z didn't need to be clayed - it's very smooth. I've put a couple coat of wax on it and it's like glass. Maybe I got lucky.

995 process lol.....
same color code for lesser GM vehicles is 495. It's the cost if the paint ALLEGEDLY...
I live the LBR I almost bought one. And I've seen your exhaust combo. That car was the reason I bought mine (albeit in twilight blue design and shark gray), mostly for the wheels which are now a relatively cheap option on 18s.

The paint jobs are still inadequate. I think it depends on who is the end of line QC inspector that day. Its seems some people will let cars leave the plant that are really bad. They need consistent criteria for paint inspection.

Paint on 2017 Admiral Blue is very good on the horizontal surfaces, orange peel on the vertical surfaces. Gloss is very good. But I assume the peel is due to the requirement to use waterborne paints, where the flow on vertical panels isn't enough to level out the orange peel. I am investigating possible correction with a local detailing shop who do not use wet sanding to correct orange peel. One thing in our favour is that GM shoots a lot of clear in the factory.
Anyone have any success with dealer providing warranty repair to orange peel? I'm not holding my breath.
