There are only a small percentage of vehicles (specifically 2017 models) that have issues with CELs. If you have a 2017 model and get CELs frequently, we would suggest holding off on buying until we have the next version (8.3) out, as it has firmware updates that have improvements for 2017 models


It sounds like these people are saying if your car has CEL on a regular basis then you have a high chance of CEL with range. I can't imagine that people get that many CEL on their new cars.

Does this sound right?

He's referring to the AFM to disable V4 mode. The company making it must have advised he hold off buying it and he is sharing that message.

I have a '16 and my Range was version 8.1R1. Range recommended I upgrade to 8.2 so sent it in yesterday.

Sorry about not being more clear on my post. Since this topic has been discussed on the forum so often I assumed everyone was familiar with Range.

What they are talking about is if you have a '17, and are getting frequent CEL's with the Range installed you should wait for the 8.3 version before you update your Range unit. 2017's themselves aren't throwing codes for no reason without the Range. Hope this helps.

CEL = Check Engine Light

Range = maker of aftermarket AFM/V4 mode disabler, also can refer to the device/software itself.

No. My 2016 with 8.2 still gets an occasional CEL.

Thats my understanding. I've been testing several betas for them on my car (still not fixed) and the communications that I've had with them point to 2017's. This is the message I received recently (July 10th):

We are continuing our testing with the "finicky" 2017 vehicles (in particular the Corvette's and Camaro's). Progress has been made thankfully but there is still a ways to go before we are done.

The range unit I have has a tag which originally read V8.1, but someone has handwritten over that so that it now reads V8.2. It took about five drive cycles on my 2016 LT1 to show a CEL and lock the transmission in 4th. Just thought I would through this out for the record.

In another thread I detailed my recent experiences with the Range AFM device and the Diablosport Sprint, which we've learned are the same device, just rebadged.

I tested the most current firmware 8.2R on my '17 GS and both devices threw CELs, with the added problem of the transmission being forced to 4th gear with the diablosport, until i removed the device and restarted the car.

Both Range and Diablosport are working on a fix and both have handled the situation with professionalism with regards to accepting that there's a problem and providing refunds (still waiting on Diablosport refund, but i'm told it's in process).

I hope they finalize a solution soon, I'm not a fan of V4 mode and using the car as my DD in NY/NJ/LI traffic shifting via the paddles in manual mode isn't very enjoyable during rush hour.

Yes. But I'm not a fan of hitting a switch every time i start/stop my car. Just my personal preference.

The bottom line is that if the device is plugged in directly before you start the car, it will most probably cause a CEL or transmission forced to 4th. Similarly, if you use the on/off switch, and leave it turned on before you start the car.

The issue seems to be that the device causes a problem during the starting process where the car's control modules communicate/synch with one another, and if the device is enabled during that process, it can cause the CELs and 4th gear situation.

Perhaps this will help you. I have a 15 thought so I do not know if this will help with the CEL problem with the Range.

Since I wrote the above, I do not have any switch anymore. Just the cable with the relay. I never turn off the range and don't need to worry about accidentally turning the switch off with my knee. No more stink'in V4 mode. If I wanted a F'ckin Prius, I would be driving that.
