Fit And Finish

Fit And Finish
Out doing errands today. While in the parking lot took a close look at my Japanese new car. The fit of fenders, doors, trunk and hood are amazing you would need a magnifying glass to maybe see any differences. Just perfect. Interior, seats, leather again just perfect. No self cracking windshields etc. I just don't understand why GM cannot achieve this level of quality consistently. Just no excuse. My C7 is OK but not at the level of Japan. I quess it is just their mindset. I know someone will say " well my Toyota had this and that " but hey maybe one out of a thousand rather than One out of fifty.

Remember, it's still a Chevy, and the refinement you want comes at a cost.
It has Ferrari-like performance. If you want Ferrari-like quality, then you'll have to pay Ferrari-like prices.
I think that GM packed a lot into to the C7 while keeping it affordable. The good news is that GM is improving... Fit and finish are worlds better than previous gens.

Which is more fun to drive, your C7 or your Japanese appliance?
BTW, the Japanese appliance is most likely made in the U.S.

Metal panels can be made much more precisely as far as tolerances go, whereas hybrid FRP panels are molded and much less precise. So that's your first answer.
With that being said... Build quality of the Corvette is the by far the worst of any car I have ever owned, seen, or heard of in my entire life. It's almost a joke.

Though the de-laminating C5 doors are not too far behind.

The only real defects with my C7 were corrected under warranty (a paint bubble and a bad rear view mirror) and I am otherwise quite pleased with the build quality, but it still bothers me to hear of and see the very real problems some folks have found with their cars. It should not be that difficult with today's technology to ensure nothing but top quality goes out the door, especially the quality that is seen with a walk around and kick the tires inspection. Even Kia can pull that off.

Fit and Finish:
Japan: I lose job, I shame father and grandfather.
USA: $55 per hour, including all my benefits, ain't enough money to make me care. I'm entitled to my job and should be making twice as much. Now shut the f... up with all this math and beer me boy, it's lunch time.

Threads like this make me a bit nervous, as I'm about to order a 2018 GS Vert. I'm going to cross my fingers I get a 'Wednesday car' and not a 'Monday car'.

My post above is meant mostly as sarcasm, but there is a hint of truth there. I wouldn't worry too much, it's a hell of a car for the money, capable of wiping smug smiles off faces of drivers in cars costing 3 or 4x as much. But if you like a perfectly finished car, this isn't it. After 2,300 miles and a long winter of storage, I've corrected most of the issues. You have to have a deep love for it, so you can overlook some of the quirks. However, put you right foot down, and all the quirks become a distant memory

You really gotta like them I guess, appreciate the capability over the rest. Kind of like a codependent relationship. You know its going to be a headache but go along with it anyways hoping it will change

Fit and finish of the C7
Maybe I am not as picky as I once was, or got lucky but, my 2017 Z06 seems put together quite well and is essentially perfect for what I wanted: a competent/potent track car that is a pleasure too look at and listen to.
My DD is a Mazda CX5 which I think is outstanding for its purpose and finished very nicely. I have found a couple of minor flaws with interior fit though.
I haven't found a flaw with the C7 yet. The paint is perfect. Panel fit seems as good as it could be. No squeaks or rattles.
Sure the interior materials could be higher quality. Mine is 1LT. But it is put together well.
So GM can do it. Why don't they do it all the time

I've driven a Ghost, Wraith, S-Class, 7 series and I don't miss their fit and finish one bit. That's not what this car is meant for.

They made a movie about this 31 years ago, and it was funny.
with Michael Keaton. The Corvette is a great car, warts and all.
perfect miatas , perfect nissan Zs - whoopee. push the loud pedal and nothing else compares to a Corvette. Acura tried, their entry is on the wrong side of $150k and first driving impressions?

The NSX feels like an Accord.

Think that all that fussing over fit/finish is cheap? Think about this:
QUESTION: If it's so easy to make a car with the Vette's performance level, price range AND the 'japanese' level of fit/finish, why aren't Toyota & Honda doing it?
ANSWER: Because a Toyota or Honda performing at the Vette's level would start at $150,000. (price out a new NSX if you don't believe me)
Seriously -- good for you if you want spend $150,000+ on a 'perfect fit/finish' sports car and have the means.
I for one am quite happy with the fit/finish level of my $50k Stingray, for the price/performance ratio it provides.
If the Corvette had a "handbuilt" option that cost $25,000 extra for a "japanese' fit/finsh level -- how many of us would choose it?
I sure wouldn't.
