a good tune can be about 30 HP and TQ, I love the guys who put headers on and then tune it and say the headers got them the HP, BS My LS2 stock 347 HP 350 TQ before 379.9 380 TQ after tune

I just got my 427 back after being dyno tuned and upgraded with a medium level cam (not a racing cam). New cam meant it had to be dyno tuned. I am now pushing 500 hp to the tires, which my tech said is an approximate gain of 80 hp over stock. Again, this is to the wheels and not the crank where the 505 hp rating comes from. I'm more like 580-585 hp at the crank. I did the cam only...no CAI and no headers. Everything else is stock. I was pleasantly surprised to gain 80 hp.

Bone stock LS7, a good safe tune is worth a real 20hp to the wheels.

Forget all about the added hp, but isntead of all the power that TM is holding back from reaching the ground at any given point instead.
Hence GM does this to protect the drive line/make the car soccer mom drive-able, but really just hobbles the hell of the car's power to the drive line isntead.
Hence TM has torque tables that limits the amount of power that the motor can send to the wheels at any given instant time. SO you can get all the power out of the motor if you allow the motor to ramp up the power for say a top end run at these fixed amounts of max instant torque levels over time, but if you floor the gas pedal, these same tables limits the amount of HP that can reach the wheels per instant bursts isntead.
So the biggest part of an initial re-tune from a stock tune, is getting all that instant HP back that the TM is hobbling in stock tune setting isntead.
Hence just de-hobbling torque management so it not holding back instant power reaching the drive line, is what give you the huge seat in pants feeling to start with, and the extra HP that the tuner can get out of the stock motor is really icing on the cake isntead.
If the car is an A6, the part of the tune is also the transmission being tuned as well, and just de hobbling the TM and firming up the trans shift points is a light years difference, even before you even go after more HP from the motor to start with. Hence the 15 to 20hp gain on a motor making over 500hp is not that much of a difference to start with, but trans firmed up, and TM now allowing all the motors power to reach the wheels instantly, makes the car feel like the motor has hundreds of HP more on the LS7 instead.
As for the next step, it's throttle mapping, since the stock throttle map only has the TB vain opening about 15% at half throttle. Hence until you floor the gas pedal, the pedal rate to the TB vain rate does not get even close to a linear ratio isntead. There are tuners that can rethrottle map, but the better method is to just use a Vitesse throttle controller.. It has 10 setting that allow the throttle mapping to be OEM in setting 1, to dam near linear in setting 10, and you can select the setting as needed per conditions.

Burning Brakes
Sorry, my Tuner's computer ate the before numbers. But after a Vararam, American Racing Headers and a tune I had 477HP and 447TQ at the rear wheels.
Anxious to see what I have following installation of street ported heads and "baby" cam as I eliminate the valve guide problem over the next couple weeks!

On the LS7, cam is not the problem, and getting the motor to breath correctly the bigger pay out instead. Hence for a motor that revs to 7k, it goes flat at 6k from the motor not being able to pull enough air in above 6K instead.
To short bus, you don't have the needed room under the stock hood for the needed intake manifold volume size to start with to allow the motor to breath past 6K to start with, so the quick way it to supercharge at lower pressure so the motor can breath all the way up to 7K to make big numbers isntead. Hence with just a S/C, the motor will be putting out in the 700HP range without break a sweat.
Hence the Merc 7.0 SB4 , built on a LS7 bottom end, makes 750hp N/A, and the huge reason for that HP number at 8K, is its intake system to allow the motor to breath correctly at the higher RPMs to begin with. The 4 valves per cylinder heads and variable timing cams help out a lot as well.
So no matter what cam you think about changing on the LS7, is a breathing problem above 6k that has to be resolved to begin with isntead.
