I would prefer to put in the OEM HUD over that one. However, it seems like that would be good for a car that never came with a HUD from the factory.

I use an app on my phone called DIGI HUD. It works great in my 81 vette since the speedo is way off and low on the project list to fix. You can turn data to the app off and it still works, which is great. It also can be displayed in regular or HUD mode. Looks great on the windshield at night but cant see it when the sun is out.

I've heard that all the aftermarket huds have less than stellar quality and functionality. That said, eventually a good company is going to come along and make a decent one and I look forward to that because after getting my Vette I am hooked on huds and want one in my daily.

IF it really works well, that one could be a pretty good buy.

There are some other ones on the market. After seeing the C6 and C7 HUD, I admit, I wish the one in my C5 was nicer. But those advancements came with youth so to speak.

I honestly didn't know these products existed, and am now intrigued.

I like this one's appearance a little better:

So, do these units simply plug into the OBD2 receptacle? Then you'd have a cable dangling in front of the dash...

For how easy it is to pull the dash, and how cheap the factory HUD parts are, i'd go that route again without hesitation.

Gm bought Hughes because they needed to update their behind the market electronics, and heads up display was one of the results, taken from airplane tech. It uses an optimized windshield, when ordered from the factory, but reportedly works fine with regular glass.

It took toyota a couple of years to bring out their version, and it wasn't as good visually.

Might be tough to get a good daylight projection with knock off stuff, but times change.

What's the procedure to loosen the left side enough to run the cable from the ODB to the front of the dash at the windshield? It seems most of these have the input plug on the side facing the windshield.

Couldn't tell you, I used OEM parts in my install.

Looks like with today's computerized technology they could make one in which you could download your own version (mix and match so to speak). I would like to see the Dash like that also, where I could have my own customized dash and when I got tired of looking at it I could download another (different) one. For a price no doubt.

I have OBD Fusion on my IPhone 8 and a bluetooth transmitter in the OBD plug. The OBD Fusion app is free and has a HUD function so no wires. I have not used the HUD yet but it should work the same as a wired version......

Thanks, I was wondering if there wasn't some way to use blue tooth. I did finally see a transmitter during a search last night. Let us know how it works.

I bought one of those cheap HUD on Ebay. The direction state they are compatible for cars 2003 and later. I first hooked up it to my 1997 C5 OBDII port and couldn't get it to read past the alternator function. I then put it on my daughter's 2003 PT Cruiser and ran into the same problem. The documentation states, this is a sign of an incompatible system. I lastly hooked it up to my wife's 2013 Taurus and got it to work on all the basic functions. (I had to play with the settings for about a half hour to get it to work. The directions appear to be written by someone not familiar with the English language).
Bottom line: for an item that cost less than $20.00, it more than adequately displays my speed on the windshield of my wife's car. If your planning to use it on a C5, I would definitely check the documentation to see that it will work with the OBDII port of your car. (PS; For those concerned about aesthetics, I ran the cable under some side molding, so the only cable showing was on top of the dash.)

There are a few HUD units that are powered by the cigarette lighter port (instead of the ODB plug) but output fewer readout items. This is probably the best one IMO that I found... https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B075F482CF/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I3PYAPN5M4PPP6&col id=1MBC4LN5NWINS&psc=0

I'm still researching what other options there are. I just wish there was a HUD unit that received info from an ODB module wirelessly, but I haven't found one, yet.

I do see that some ODB2 modules only are "ELM327" and Bluetooth, which could just transmit to either/or an iOS or Android phone, or tablet. That's another option, just not HUD. (Edit): ELM327 ODB2 modules with version 1.5 - are clones of the original ELM units.

I am a huge fan of hud and would love to try that in my truck.

I agree. I have considered that one for my Tundra and/or Highlander, which both can use the ODB2 connection.
