Your new rotor. Is it correctly installed?

Sounds like your rotor is 180 off..

Put the square peg of the rotor in the square hole on the distributor plate. But if it's installed backwards, it shouldn't even start. Make sure all plug wires are seated well on the cap, and firing order proper.

Always a good idea to change the wires when you do cap and rotor. If the wires are old and brittle they could crack and cause a miss fire. Check the ignition wires and make sure they are tight. Is this a points ignition or electronic.? If it is backfiring out the tail pipe it's electrical, if it is backfiring out of the carb a fuel issue. Hope you find the gremlin.
