What do you do if you have non-run flats and get a flat tire?
I’m sure this has been asked and answered, but what if you get a flat and don’t have run flats? I’m currently using run flats, which limits your choice of tires, so what do people do if they don’t have run flats?
You have to roll the tire around find the puncture. Then pull out the nail or whatever. You have to force a reamer thru the puncture hole. Get the plug threaded thru the plug installer and add glue sealant then push ithe plug in the puncture reamed hole. You are done and air up the tire. However this is if everything goes perfect and it never does. And remember this can happen on a dark wet road and you are laying on the ground doing all this. I have had run flats and non run flats. For my garage queen cruzer I go with run flats for the piece of mind.
Twenty dollar plug kit and air compressor. I also throw a little white out in the glovebox to find the hole. Sounds nuts but it takes me longer to type this than it does to pump up the tire, thread the little pipe cleaner thing on the t shaped tool and stick it in the tire hole and remove. Then when I get a chance I stop over at a tire shop and have them put a tire patch on the inside and your tire is as good as new.
I put on probably hundred thousand mikes and have gotten one flat on this c6 z51 and I put about 65k miles on my z06....probably done the tire repair twice..
Definitely not a big deal and worth the 10 minute fix three times over the past 15 years...
Good luck and the lower unstrung weight is well worth it.
I carry a plug kit and portable air compressor, but it depends on how bad the flat is. This is what happens on a catastrophic blowout:
I take long road trips and this is exactly what keeps me from using non runflats. I have had 2 catastrophic tire failures in the past 5 years (not on a Vette) that would have left me stranded on the side of the road. At least with a runflat you have a chance to limp along to the next semblance of civilization. The one time I needed a tow in town it took them 2.5 hours to get to me. Do you really relish being stranded in the desert at 100+ degrees, in the middle of nowhere, waiting for a tow for hours?

This was the first catastrophic tire failure I've had in 35+ years of driving. The majority of flats are simple punctures; this one was a manufacturing defect that caused the blowout in less than 500 miles of having the tire mounted. I'm good with those odds.

The tire deflates... Seriously, WTF? Have you never seen or operated an automobile? The tires are the same as they are on a corvette. Either use a plug kit and lighter powered pump or call a tow. People blow my mind on this site.

This is what keeps me from thinking about non run flats.
Laying on the ground on a So Cal busy road or freeway. Trying to find that puncture on a tire that you can barely see the tread in the first place, (Grand Sport). Forget that. It seems like someone gets hit and killed here on the side of the road in So Cal every day , Run flats AND AAA for me.

Good point. I could be using run flats with 3 different layers of puncture resistant linings and i'd wind up running over a 12 inch nail that would puncture all three.....

Not in recent history. The early 2010's have seen a growing number of cars being sold brand new with an inflater and some sort of slime canister, no spare, no run-flats.

Supposedly in the name of weight savings, and resultant higher mpg. BS - it's all about saving money for the OEM. I would be forced to switch to runflats for any car I own that does not have a real spare tire of some type.
