Cost of replacing rack and pinion in '92 Corvette
I have a '92 Corvette, and it had problems with the power steering for a couple weeks, including "morning sickness." I finally brought it into a Corvette repair shop in Houston (Corvette Doctor), and they said that replacing the rack and pinion would cost about $1350 to be done right. He insisted that I should use steel parts, not the rebuilt parts from e.g. O'Reilly. Is he right that rack and pinion from O'Reilly or AutoZone are very bad? Does the cost, $1350, sound reasonable to you? Thanks for your help!

I believe a few vendors offer a "send it to us"rebuild service" or out eight buy. Did you know a z-51 R&P will swap right in there. Quicker steering upgrade.

Melting Slicks
Assuming they are including new tie rod ends and an alignment, which they should be, your looking at about $900 in labor. If you use 6 hours labor, which IMO is longer than necessary for a shop experienced in corvettes, that's around $150 an hour. Is that a reasonable rate in Houston?
I also don't understand what "steel parts" means.

Any reputable (and competent ) auto repair shop can replace the rack. Their parts sources would most likely not be from any of the chain auto parts stores. Most shops have online access to parts wholesales that offer professional grade replacement parts.
I was never sure if the '92 had two different R&P turn rates based on the FE1 suspension or the Z07 suspension. But as mentioned, if there is a quick steering rack available, it will bolt in.
Maybe all that your rack needs is a rebuild kit. Rockauto has an AC Delco rebuild kit for $25.00 plug shipping. Rockauto also has inner and outer tie rod ends from AC Delco and Moog.
In any event, you should check with different shops to get some price quotes. That $1350 sounds pretty high considering that the rack comes from a chain parts store.

Steel parts probably refers to the sleeve . Mine was so bad no more left turns.
I took it out(not too hard but the cleaning is) brought it to a local rebuild and he charged 140.00 with a metal sleeve. Chances are you will need a sleeve if it is really bad. At some point c4 went from aluminum R&P to steel I am not sure which model. Even the Corvette Shop quoted me 900.00 but I did it for a total of 250.00 includind pump, lines, ect.
