2014 C7 Lug Nuts Failed
Ok. I'm one of the crazy owners who drives their car year round. Every year I take my chrome rims and put on my painted rims with appropriate winter tires. Today I was making the tire change when several of the lug nuts began to fail. There are just regular old lug nuts. Apparently the lug nuts that failed has a cheap metal cover that separates from the actual nut. I wonder if the stock Chevy lug nuts are garbage or maybe the tire guy who worked on my car put on several aftermarket nuts. I now want to replace all my lug nits. Do I buy factory or do they make an aftermarket lug nut that is all metal and dipped in stainless steel vs the ones that failed that had a cheap SS cover that eventually separates off. Thanks!

What, exactly, do you mean when you say they "failed?" Failed how? If it's just the cosmetic cover coming off of the nut that's not a failure and won't affect anything except how it looks.

There's no cover on my OEM lug nuts. It's a solid piece of metal.

If someone (you?) is using an impact gun it may be causing problems with rounding the edges (wrong size socket mm vs inch) or stripping the threads (torque set to high)....we need more info as to exactly the "lug nuts failing" means.

I have a air tools but I prefer to use a lug wrench when installing tires. Here is a pic of how the lug nut separated. Not sure if this was a stock lug nut or aftermarket.
A picture is worth many words - for sure.

I have a gorilla lug wrench and it crushed the outer cover. Do they make a solid lug nut. I think these are fine if you buy tires every several years but they don't hold up when they are taken on and off twice a year. Thanks

Shouldn't be 'failed' just cosmetic issue.

From the picture it looks like your lug wrench is only gripping the lug nut about half way down. Get a good deep well lug nut socket that grips at full length, that may mitigate the damage somewhat.

I always use a deep, 6 point socket, and never an impact, so have never had a factory lug nut separate.

We put over 100k miles on our 2009, which seems to use the same lug nuts, with a fair number of wheel changes. The cosmetic "covers" were looking a little beat up when inspected closely, but from 3 feet away they look normal.

OEM lugnuts are garbage. I replaced mine with McGard. Solid stainless steel.
