Default 1991 Delco Gold Bose Radio Just Died

So, I was cruising along listening to some tunes and all of the sudden the radio went dead. There is power to the unit, the clock displays tiem and antenna goes up and down. The cassette player won't play either. About a day or so before it went dead, I heard this annoying high pitched squeeling sound coming from the rear speakers. Not sure if this is a related issue.

Couple of questions to the group please. First, does anyone have a solution, or had a similar experience that you can share, with a fix? Second, what recommendations do you have for a good radio shop who I can send the head unit to for repair?

Your EDM is probably shot. Pretty typical actually.

It is a PITA to take out as it is located under and up in the dash on the passenger side.

I swapped mine. several hours. Not hard, just super tight spaces. Yikes!

You might want to think of replacing your head unit, with something with todays bluetooth for your phone and iPod, and perhaps install Sirius Receiver.
When I had my C4, that was the first thing I replaced, was the radio system. When I bought my C6, again the first thing I replaced for my enjoyment. My only regret was I didn't get unit with GPS.

Here's what I did when my Bose Gold died!

New Alpine Double Din and new Alpine Speakers with new Speaker material covers instead of carpet

You and I had the same idea, but I didn't wait till something broke, I herd all kinds of stories.
Looks good!

Had Best Buy rewire it. Better they abuse their body than me trying to contort myself in the confines of the garage spot I have. I then soldered it to the plugs and put in something way better than that POS. Yes, it was good for it's time but that time is past.

POS? I heard the Bose Gold sounds better than the new Corvette radios.

It's antiquated. Who plays cassettes anymore? I don't have to repair anything anymore. Back speakers are bad? Toss them. Same with front. No need to be bound by some old tech that cannot bluetooth or GPS or hook up a phone to charge to, etc.

There's a place in FL that services the Bose units. I had them go over and fix my speakers and head unit years ago. I put in an Alpine (single-DIN) unit (mine was AM/FM/CASS, no CD and I wanted CE and had no use for CASS).

Yeah, it's a PITA. Still doesn't work quite right (need a Scrosche (?) adapter to use non Bose control unit with the Bose speakers, and now my sound fades in and out). I shoulda listened to the kid at the audio shop. Yank out the Bose and just put in a good system. It's cheaper than getting the Bose units reno'd. The Bose were great in the day, but they're over 25 years old now. Time to move on.

Default Radio Repair

If you want stock ie NCRS then Doctor Don in Texas is your guy. Fast, reasonable, and it all works.

100% agree on Dr Don if you want to ensure that you are able to do NCRS. If not, you can rewire and get it fixed with something newer and better. Keep your stuff if you have any interest in trying to get it to work again. Mine either ended up being a target or part of a landfill

I have used them on several occasions - they know what they are doing. They also have numerous helpful guides online.

Why? He is half way there. Just replace the Bose crap completely. Sure, you can repair it but you are tied to this guy. He goes out of business or stops working on it like many tuners have stopped working on C4 cars and you have a problem.

Even fully functional, the new stuff is way more functional. GPS, Bluetooth, CD Changer, remote, can charge my cell phone, etc. Other than NCRS, only reason to rehab old technology is it isn't financially feasible to replace, IMO

Had my Bose speakers rebuilt at Factory Car Stereo in Florida, works great and sounds fantastic. Don't need GPS, Bluetooth, phone, etc. when I'm rolling in the Vette. CD player works good and have a ton of music on computer to burn all the CDs I can use. Mick and the boys sound great on the Bose..

Unless you are a serious audiophile, I would agree the Bose would suffice. Still, you are tying yourself to the vendors who are fixing it and the system as it is. Why would someone want that as opposed to buying a newer unit that you can mix and match as you please?
