Steering wheel screws
My steering wheel was secured with clutch screws. One of them is damaged. When I look to replace them, the screws are Philips head. I'm wondering if these might not be original?

The clutch heads are correct for C1 cars...they get damaged when people use a regular screwdriver or other device to remove them. NAPA has a 4 clutch head screwdriver set that will cover everything you need on your car.
BTW - we're not psychic - we don't know what year or generation car you're working on if you don't have the courtesy to tell us...

Sorry. It's a 63 white convertible. It was a gift from my brother in Florida. Ive had it for about ten years and have been restoring it a little at a time. - I have the correct screwdriver head, but one screw is incorrect, so I want to replace it. Problem is the replacement screws I have found are philipshead. Do you know where I might find couch head screws? Thanks

Are you talking about screw 9418712 that secures the steering wheel to the mast jacket ?
Pictures would help... #4 in this picture...

Yes, like #4. Funny that someone used clutch head. Maybe for security. They do look good on the wheel. I guess I'll just order a set of Philips head screws.

Mine (original 63) are Philip's head and the replacements from Doc Rebuild and Daves Corvette and others by that part number are the same...
Somebody might have gotten confused in the last 50 years working on the car and had some C1 screws laying around they just substituted - I've seen stranger things..
The vendors will try to swap things around on you...most repro C1 door handles come with a Philip's head large mounting screw and they were originally clutch head...

There is nothing special about those screws. They are common hard ware store type

Use a drop of Locktite on each screw when you reinstall them. They can come loose - ask me how I know!

My May 29th car does not... They're Philip's head.
Dr Rebuild has clutch head screws if you want to go that route..

Thank you, that's good to know should I decide to use them. I appreciate all your help. FYI: I have completed ithe painting of the steering column. Today I am going to begin putting it back on the car. Hopefully, I will not run into any issuess. The pictures and info you sent will be a huge help. Best, Lewis

FYI - the thing that gave me the most trouble on my 63 column was adjusting the spring with the clamp on the firewall side of the column. This adjustment is important as it 'loads' the tension on the other column components. One of those jobs that takes four hands.
What I did was take my largest Stanley, plastic jawed woodworking clamp and ram the spring and clamp up on the clean (no grease) column to hold the tension so I had my hands free to tighten the clamp with sufficient force to have .020" between the spring coils as checked with a feeler gauge. I see a lot of cars where the spring is way too loose.
After driving 50-100 miles check the bolt on the steering coupler (rag joint) for tightness while rocking the steering column back and forth..

Unless you bought the car new and can say for certain the steering wheel was never removed how can anyone say what screw was used
