Default Frame Swap Begins

The frame is now painted, so it’s time to get started. I’ll disassemble the dolly I built for the frame, and build the body dolly with it and the rest of the leftover lumber from the frame crate/pallet. I watched the NA body removal video (again), and got my checklist ready to go. I’ll keep you posted...

Remember, it's just nuts and bolts. A big model kit. Take it easy, don't rush, and stay safe. Turn on the radio and do as much as you feel like in a setting. Before you know it, you'll be done. Like eating an elephant: one small bite at a time.

This is the most enjoyable project I could imagine doing. Getting to start with a smooth new frame that is beautifully painted, it will be like building a model kit at GTOguy says. I hope to do one this way with my little girl when she gets a few years older.

I have a new body mount kit, but what else will I need to put it back together? I figure new fuel and brake line clips, but any thoughts on other items that may not transfer well?

I’ve also been thinking about the shims. Noland mentions to record the number at each mount, but since I am going onto a new frame, is this relevant? Are the shims to level, or just close the gap between the body and frame?

What condition are the body mounts in? Usually a rusty frame is connected to the body with rusted out body mounts.

Do I need to remove the steering column, or can I just disconnect from the frame and pitman arm? I have seen both listed.

The steering gear/column should stay on the body - that's the way it was assembled originally.

Thank you. I went with the GM Chassis paint from Melrose. Trying to get to all the nooks and crannies I got a lace curtain I need to fix, but overall pleased with it. Neal suggested the lines, so I had them shipped with the frame. I just added the clips to my CC shopping cart.

Is there anything with the E-brake I might need to order, or will it all transfer from the old? The E-brake worked when I parked it.

It will transfer fine. You might have to adjust it a little afterwards. Pretty easy to do.

The frame looks great!

That frame looks to pretty to cover it up with a car body.

I found an article that helped me with my shims
I devided the shims into quarters and placed them on the 4 outboard locations under the seat
Checked door gaps
and then checked the other locations to see how many shims were needed
I then removed 1 shin from left and right side and checked the front and back locations to see if the body was resting on the frame
I did that until I had just the insulators between the body and frame and the door gaps were even

Good Luck!

Do you have the front end rebuilt yet ?

So I’m thinking about the “big model kit” reference, and it seems the last person that put it together must have “borrowed” parts from other kits, and maybe even a few other items from the toy box.

I had my first experience with this years ago when I bought a disassembled (not by me) '47 Chrysler. I was pulling pieces and parts out of boxes in the car and they looked like they came from another planet. Talk about a puzzle!!! Got it running/driving in a couple of months and took it on a 1600+ mile epic road trip without so much as a hiccup. You'll get there!
