Default CA Front Plate Law

When I lived in Nevada, the State Legislature passed a law repealing mandatory front license plates. The law essentially stated if your car had a place for a front plate you needed to have one. However, special installation (e.g. drilling holes in the car), meant you did not need a front plate. It made a lot of sense from an owners point of view.

Question: Has CA ever tried to repeal or modify the front plate law?

Never seen it being repealed. Anything on the ballots just want to raise our taxes. Local and state. And the idiot people who vote approve to raise taxes and vote in things like the stupid bag tax. Still yet to meet anyone who voted on that. Happy to say I am gone from Cal this year but not sure it will be any better in WA State. At least the county I will be in isn't so tree hugger crazy.

I use to live in Washington. They are pretty much ALL tree huggers!
Please take Jerry Brown with you!

Jerry Brown's legacy will be his name over a transgender bathroom.

I certainly wouldn't deprive the wonderful state of California voters by taking Jerry Brown with me.

Back to the original question...I've had 7 Vettes. Never had a front plate and never a ticket for it. However, while stationed in Wash D C had a 56 Chevy with no front plate. Got a ticket from metro policeman who use to live in California. Unbelieveable

Probably a crazy idea, but maybe there is a car guy/gal in Sacramento that would want to sponsor a bill similar to the one in Nevada? Thoughts?

Don’t hold your breath. This is a great revenue source for state and local municipalities free money. When did we ever see the government give back money. My ticket for no front plate was from a meter maid at a fully paid meter plenty of time but they decided to waste time and get a few dollars from me. We will never see the law changed no incentive. Good luck trying to persuade an over paid under worked politician.

LOL. You're probably right. Nevada has "Hot August Nights" in Reno each year that is a week long event and highly supported. California legislature wants a high speed bullet train to nowhere so we don't have much support. Still, I might snoop around.

So, make it work for ya! If the men's roon is occupied, declare yourself female and use the other one!
We just bought in N. AZ, where few, if any cars, have F plates and the drivers are courteous, and more. I saw a sole case of a light turning green, then sitting while the car in front finished her text; here, it's routine. There are, however, many 'blue hair express' cars.

Reno seems not all that far behind CA, with smog testing for cars '68 and newer and drivers in a hurry!

You need to sell it as an additional fee and they might go for it. Add 20 dollars to your registration to go without front plate and a special sticker on the back plate (so they can still give tickets for those who don't pay).

Great idea but only problem some cities still have red light cameras
and that is a big revenue generator for them. It's still all about the money

If the Red Light Camera system cannot capture a photo with a front plate than there will be a photo of the rear plate provided for the reviewing Officer.

I contacted my rep in the state house a couple of years ago about the elimination of front plates .

I told him it would cut the cost of making plates in half.

The state would save money.

Obviously that idea didn't impress him because I never heard from him once I submitted the idea.

Bob.

With the proliferation of license plate reader technology, there is no real justification to go back to one plate.

Besides the street units that see the rear plate, there are many affixed to police cars that could catch either plate. I predict that in the future, this will no longer just be used for finding stolen cars and for tracking criminal cases, but will be there to ding you for expired registration or insurance, or used similarly to European metro areas to fine you for congestion charges in city centers.

I run my car without a front plate. Plenty of my friends do too. Mostly we're playing our luck. There's more cars than cops here

Most police officers won't write that ticket unless they or you are having issues. The many city parking chimps will, however, happily write that ticket to parked cars-pure revenue for the municipality.

Avoid Santa Monica ruthless meter maids. As I said in another post they need the money for more homeless outreach.
