Default What's it really cost

For those of you out there that have either built or had someone build you a resto mod. What did it cost? C1 or C2. We all know how much it cost to buy one from BJ

Parts, including a car, about 90k. If you cheap out, maybe less. If you source any work, like body/paint, maybe more. It takes me about 1000 hours, but most builders take much longer. I have no minions, and do all of the work myself, including paint and bodywork. There are a million ways to spend more, and a million ways to spend less.
The cars that were recently sold at bj were over the top builds. Not really a good fit for my model.Btw, I’ve built and sold thirty of them, so I have a pretty good handle on it. My costs are all “dealer” costs, or wholesale, with no mark-up to the customer.

No, we don't, this year is an anomaly and the 'smart money' has already been made. Jumping on the band wagon now will have you as part of the 'pack' that will take a beating if you're gonna flip. Same with any investment...

If you want to build one to drive/keep - that's a different thing altogether. Well done C1/C2 restomods were going for $125K-$150K typically recently. Split windows for a good amount more though. Mike Coletta just sold a top-shelf restomod 63 convertible in that range a few weeks back.

What did Mike have into it? Don't care what it sold for. I know what I can build one for just wondering what others have spent.

And there you have it from one of the most experienced builders out there - way before they became the 'in' thing...

Off Topic but...yes, with the extended forks and 'ape hanger' handle bars...hard to drive/steer. The inexperienced rider would spend a lot of time on the pavement... I had one briefly - never wanted another

The point being, fads come and go, but the authentic endures.
Loved the “street sweepers” but could not stand the decibels, Frankie.

Yuppers.

The automotive equivalents of real estate "scrapers" are being searched out and bought up right now, 230/250 HP OK drivers, and maybe even higher end c1s, going to get a SRIII chassis, turn key crate LT4 with auto trans, shitty cut rate bondo spcial body work under a gleaming BB/CC paint job, some leather interior , and there will be 30 or more at next years BJ.

Default resto mods

No one want to admit they have more in them than they can sell them for. BJ is not the norm. Just my two cents.

So that 90K doesn't include you labour then, right Mike?

Do you charge an hourly rate for customer cars?

I used to. The last 5 or so we’re done on a flat rate. Not doing anymore.

Mike;

Are you saying you are not flat rating them anymore, or you are not building anymore resto-mods.

I have seen a couple of your cars; they are awesome.

Thanks Mike, now I don't have to add up all my receipts!
Not even five cents an hour for labor !

Well thats too bad! I would have shipped my corvette out there. Have you do the work for 100k then flip it at BJ for at least 250k... Maybe next year!

Just out of curiosity, what does the $90-$100k get you? I’m not up to speed on what really goes into making a restomods outside what I can see. I appreciate the education.

SRIII

C4 front/C4 rear STAGE TWO...........$13,700.00
Includes stage one frame plus all suspension components cleaned, reconditioned, and installed. Includes Dana 36 rear diff, four coil-over shocks, power rack-n-pinion steering, front sway bar, tubular adjustable strut rods, calipers, pads, rotors and flexible stainless brake hoses. C5 front/C4 rear...$14,500.00

There goes 16k out the window.
Figure another 4k on wheels.
Tires 1k
Paint work on suspension parts 2K
Body work and glass 15k
Paint 10k
exhaust 1k
engine 10k
chrome 4k
interior 15k
trans 5k
air 2k
sound system 3k
other parts 10k (if need to be spruced up)
wiring 1k

Close to 100k. Add another 25% of unknowns....

For mine I think I could do it for less but not that much less. (cut out the body work and some of the other parts).

Awesome. Thank you. Having never driven one, how much different is the driving experience?
