Default The Dragon in Winter

Last week, for my 60th birthday, Karen and I drove the Tail of the Dragon. Had it nearly all to ourselves, as you might guess.

The main shops by the entrance were closed for the season (without specifying any dates) so souvenir shopping was minimal. We picked up a couple of Tee's closer to Robbinsville.

As you cross into Tennessee, a sign reads: "This road is not treated" which didn't slow us down. Turns out, it was freshly treated with salt because, as we found out at the souvenir stop, there had been a few, um, "incidents". I think they must have a three wreck rule in TN. After three, it's cheaper to treat the road than to pick up the pieces.

Not necessarily recommended, but a birthday I won't forget. Big fun.

Outstanding. Good for you for driving your Vette in January

I've only done the Tail in Summer, but I'm sure it wasn't crowded when you went.

Thanks guys. Just wanted to show everyone that the C4 is quite capable year 'round.

Some folks had me ready to believe that they melt in the rain.

Happy 60th!! "The Dragon" is one of my favorite events in what has become an annual event leading up to the C4 gathering in Bowling Green every year. Good to get out in January for a shot at the SCALY BEAST!

Having the road to ourselves, and seeing the "This Road is NOT Treated" sign at the entrance was intimidating. I took it really easy for the first couple turns.

But the fresh salt was all it took. My Nittos grabbed like mad. If it had been slick earlier, it wasn't at the time.

Toughest part of the trip was getting out of the little lakeside community where we stayed in Robbinsville. Rutted gravel road, untreated, with a steep climb out just before an off-camber hard-left dogleg. That was a nail biter.

Hi Paul! Thanks. It's more fun going through with a loooong line of C4s for sure. Even if they're too slow. We're hoping to make another mountain run with the group this year. Good times.

I certainly laugh at those that don't drive in rain. Only reason is they don't want to clean it afterwards

I'm itching ready for MR6, hopefully the car will make the whole trip this time, I think I got most of the neglect worked out. The annual mountain run is the highlight of my year, either a strong statement for the MR or a lowly statement of how boring my life is.

I'm doing the Dragon in May, after the C4 gathering in Bowling Green. Gonna be a blast in my '88 Coupe. Always wanted to ride it on my Harley, but that was not to be, for lots of reasons.

Well, in case you didn't know, the MR6 takes place starting on the Sunday the week of the C4 gathering, and ends up AT THE GATHERING on Wednesday afternoon.

You're sure welcome to join the party! Just keep an eye on this forum for an announcements for MR6 (aka Mountain Run #6) and get specific updates!

It's fun on a Yamaha.

But nothing compares to the Motorsports Park at Bowling Green. That alone is worth the trip to the NCM.
