Glenn's Reluctant Body Off 69 Basket Case Project
I have enjoyed following others restoration and build threads so I thought I would throw up some pictures of mine. I have a bit of catching up to do picture wise as the body is already off and getting ready for paint. But it is fun for me to look back and see all the before pictures.
Ironically, as the same time I was working on this one, I saw a 69 on ebay that seemed like it was in great shape and going cheap. I thought, maybe I can drive that one while I am working on my project. I bid on it and won. The car was a wonderfully original 350/350, the same engine as my basket case. It drove great, but it made me realize I wanted more power from my basket case project. So I sold that car and now the 69 project is going to be a hot rod instead of restoration.
So let the fun begin.

Saving a '69.....you're a trooper. Those interior pics look exactly like my '68 basketcase pics. we'll be looking forward to more updates.

While this thing looks nasty with a ton of surface rust, the bones appear solid.
No obvious frame or birdcage rust issues yet

Following along as it sure brings back a lots of memories. Half the fun is in the journey. For those of us that like working on our cars it's a good thing they are never done, there is always more to do. T

Hi Glenn,
Very nice to see what you're working on!
It appears you have a good bit of work in front of you but 69 cars are certainly worth the effort.
I hope you find the process, the work, and the time spent, to be a pleasure!!!
Regards,
Alan
I like the Volvo P1800 in the poster.
Now they REALLY rusted!

Drifting
It's funny when I see the term "Basket Case" and in some aspects the subject car is nicer than the one I drive 1,000 miles a year...makes me feel like I have some catching up to do...
Looks like a fun project and a not-horrible starting point. Great year and great car. Things look pretty well lined up, which is awesome.
Hope you have a great time with it.

So one dark night, in a fit of madness I tested one of the 8 body bolts to see if it was frozen as they so often are. Shockingly it broke loose. I kept going. Before I knew it, I had all 8 bolts turning free.
Even so, I still resisted. I tried to wire wheel and sand the frame with the body on. I even posted questions here hoping someone would tell me to keep the body on. Some even did. However, in a moment of weakness....well....you will see.

Great eye on the artwork. That is a picture of a 1968 Volvo 1800s I did a rotisserie restoration on. Rust is absolutely the key to those cars. The problem with that car is it turned out too nice to drive without worrying about rock chips etc., so I sold it and am using that money for this corvette project.
Interestingly, my next door neighbor at the time was a designer for Nissan who had did the body design of the 370Z. He took a picture my wife took of the Volvo and turned into the poster art on the wall on his computer. My wife then gave it to me for a present.
He has since left Nissan after many years and now works at Tesla. He designed the new Tesla big semi truck. Great guy who loves classic cars

As a teenager pumping gas one of our customers had put a small block in one of those Volvos, looked pretty cool. T

Indeed on the Tesla job.
Speaking of motors/engines, the engine in my car actually ran when I got it.
I did a compression check, but two adjacent cylinders were low (head gasket?). The block numbers did match as did the numbers on the trans and rear end.
I don't have any history on this car, but is must have sat forever. You wouldn't believe the nasty rusty coolant that came out of the radiator and the leaks from every seal

Now comes the fun part. Taking things apart.
I have a friend who has a corvette shop who likes to say, "Anyone can take a watch apart, but not everyone can put it back together."
Indeed.
I love these storage bins. I got them on sale at the local Costco for about $7 each.
Because I have a small garage, a number of them have been put in the crawl space under my house.
