Default Bell housing

I have a bell housing with casting number "3741311" and it is a "GM1"
Can not find anything that says what "GM1" is for or from. What I think is the casting date is "11157" and the clutch pivot ball mounts on the inside of the bell housing.

I don't know if it is the Mold number. It is on the left side in the same position as the part number. So my guess would be it is since you asked the question.

GM1 is definitely a foundry pattern number - a common practice used by GM foundries for internal traceability. It has nothing to do with the configuration of the part.

THAT IS EXACTLY CORRECT!!!
The GM1 or GM8 or GM27, etc, is seen on blocks, heads, manifolds rearend cases, water pumps etc, etc, etc. As mentioned, it simply identifies the mold (or pattern) from which the part was cast.

That is a late 50s cast iron housing for cars with an open bottom. It was used with a 14in diameter, 168 teeth flywheel and a bell housing mounted starter. The housing bolt pattern will mount to ANY Chevy V8 engine (SB, W-motor, BB) and the transmission bolt pattern will mate with any Chevy manual tranny or aftermarket 4-5-6spds.

Be careful with 'any', as there are transmissions with larger or smaller bearing retainers

Mold number would apply to cast iron bellhousings. Aluminum bellhousings were die cast, so it would represent a die number. Of course it is sometimes called a die mold.

Pop,
They were all sand cast up till the '63 421 bell which was die cast. The '64 409 & Z-16 bell was the last to be sand cast.

That is correct, but 63 was the only year with the small hole, and it got an alum (421) housing.
The housings with an even larger hole were used with big truck trannys and I didn't want to add to the confusion.

Tom
while technically a truck transmission, the MY6 is a perfect replacement for the Muncie in a corvette and uses the 'truck' bellhousing

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, well I hate to burst your bubble, but I own a car with an original VIN plate which indicates that it is a 1956 Corvette.
