Default Fuel Additives? Techron?

When the weather breaks, I will be driving my "New to me" 2004 vette. I have never used a fuel additive in any of my vehicles. I did have a 95 vette I just traded in- never used the stuff. Should I be using them? Thoughts? How much do I put in my tank? The one most often mentioned is Techron. Are there others? Are they the same?

I use one bottle of Techron Concentrate that treats 20 gallons in my C5 twice a year. Never had any need for any other additive. The Techron will help keep the fuel sending units clear of sulfur buildup which helps prevent erroneous fuel gauge issues.

2004 has a funky fuel system and a known problem on these is innacurate gauges. Use top tier fuel - (I run Shell) and run some techron through it occasionally. Do a little searching on c5 fuel gauge issues - you'll find plenty of reading.

You do not want to have to pay to have this system worked on - it's an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure scenario.

I will buy some this weekend. It looks like my 2004 has about an 18 gallon tank correct? I will use just less than a bottle. Thank you!!!!

Pour the entire bottle in when you have less than 1/4 tank of gas.

Wait until your tank is low and before filling up, put a whole bottle of techron in the tank. It's the same additives they put in fuel but super concentrated. Periodically running a tank of concentrated detergents keep the fuel system clean. I'd do it at least once a year regardless of miles.

Use the whole 20 oz bottle...I put in a 20 oz bottle of Techron concentrate when I am at 1/2 on fuel gauge then fill up.

I do this about every 4th fill up....also I use Exxon premium which has Techron in it...luv that Techron...keeps sulfur off the fuel cards...cheap insurance

I look for a buy one get one free and stock up...I save money all the time like that then go blow the money I have saved on some crrap I really don't need....

update...about every 4th fill up for me would be about 500 miles also...I never let it go under half anyhoo...

I dump a bottle in about every 500 miles. I think the bottle recommends every 1000 miles.

Congratulations on the 2004
Wow...I had a '95 ZF6 speed Vert I sold a while back...had it for 15 years...loved it...That's where I got my name...Yello95 and never changed name when I got my 2004...I also used Techron in it...They stopped selling Chevron gas with Techron here a few years ago...
I miss my '95....kept it in near mint condition...it went to a good home though...

I have that tricky gauge problem in my 04, and tried the techron treatment twice, and saw no change.
Those two times were the only time I ever let the tank get lower than 3/4 full, because the take is supposed to be just about empty when using techron.
I just put up with it's erratic behavior.
It usually works correctly after about a ten minute drive.

Bob...don't be afraid to let it go to 1/4 then dump 2 bottles in and fill it up...do this a few times until it dissolves the build up of sulfur from the fuel cards...it use to drive me nuts...then I fixed it...

The Techron will not harm anything...guaranteed...

I use a bottle of Techron every few tanks. Costco has the best price right now, you get an 8 pack for $15. An even better fuel system cleaner is Royal Purple Max Clean. It's about $9 a bottle and works very well. I usually put a bottle of this in the tank if all my vehicles at every oil change.

As others mentioned, buy gas only from brands that meet Top Tier specs:
http://www.toptiergas.com/licensedbrands/

And Technron periodically. I also like to do Techron right before putting the car in storage for the winter because that gives a nice long period of time to soak through the fuel system and dissolve carbon/contaminants.

Also note there is a difference between Techron "Fuel Injector Cleaner" and "Complete Fuel System Cleaner" with the latter being better. I believe the Costco deal mentioned above is only for the injector cleaner.

To all those saying they tried and it didn't work: I had the same issue and it never worked until I used it on a roadtrip down to florida, about 750 miles each way. I used it back to back and after the second tank everything was working perfectly. I honestly need to do it again because its starting to act up again, its been either 3 or 4 years since I went on that trip.

techron is good stuff,

this is the best stuff, its really a one time per year application not a continual use additive. it use to be sold as a fuel system cleaner now they call this name. its a steal under $13 a bottle. use it with any older car and you will be amazed. i usually look for a purchase of 4-5 with a lower total price, its hard to find locally

Yep. I had the dreaded "You're out of gas!!!!" warning come on on my way to the NCM in Kentucky right around where I assumed was 1/2 tank (one of the two tanks was empty.) A bottle of techron and a fill up and it worked again all the way down to 1/4 tank.

Had it happen a couple other times and a bottle of techron solved it each time. Last time was on the way back from the outer banks. It freaks the wife out when it happens though. She's paranoid about running out of gas...

The techron is very good to use. Shell & Chevron also use the techron in their fuel. I use Costco fuel all the time in the vette, They use their own additives at the pump. Not a single problem since. Good chance it is the techron. Before Costco began using the additive i would also use what they sold in their stores. Its not the same as the concentrate but is affective. Quit a few years since any problems with the fuel gage.

Put 2 regular bottles of Techron in a full tank of Chevron super unleaded and run the tank dry.

Techron is good stuff.

I only run Exxon or Shell and give the system a boost of Techron every so often. No problems.....!
