cracked ac bracket where the "secret bolt" is.
so I am cleaning up the AC bracket and tensioner pulley and after scraping a quarter inch of crud off of the bracket, I discovered a crack.
comments on my new crack?
Second question, is there any reason for all of the white stuff on the mounting surface between the tensioner pulley and the AC bracket?
is this like on the sea beam where the white paste is recommended to avoid squeaking?
kind of looks like corrosion
pictures below
what is up with the white stuff, it's hard like corrosion. if it was some sort of lubricant it's rockhard now
this crack is where the secret bolt goes through on the front of the bracket
just in case anybody wants to know The tensioner pulley bearing to order for a 1986 you can see the model here. 6203LU

Burning Brakes
The white stuff is corrosion. Bare aluminum will corrode when it gets wet and since both parts are aluminum, the trapped water from rain and washing will create that white crud. Where I work, we have to store raw material outside and sometimes it gets wet. When that happens, we have to run the sheets through our large belt sander to clean of the corrosion.

I thought the earlier ones came with 2 brackets and it kept breaking so they went with 3 brackets?

Ask Geradvg for that info. Photobucket has not allowed posting here because we don't pay and it is retroactive

I'd buy myself a new one and weld it up for a spare. I know firsthand what happens when it breaks on the road. New belt and a tow assuming nothing has flopped around and broke something else Ask me how I know

Ive broken one on the road, fix this one and buy a new one.
And you must use all the extra braces that it comes with. Better yet, if you can weld and work steel, fab some new sturdy ones out of steel instead of that potmetal they used.
And you might have a market to sell them here since GM has stopped making these brackets.

Mine lasted for years before it broke. Bought another one and a couple months later, it broke. Thankfully the 2nd time didn't take out the AC hoses Both times required a flatbed home. I decided to get to the bottom of the matter Seems like it needs 3 braces not 2 conveniently located ones. I also have a spare on that I bought just in case the third one broke and it was not available even from the boneyard.

What extra braces? I don't think he can fit the 3rd one that my 91 has, can he? I had a hell of a time finding it after it was pointed out to me that I was missing it.
Depending on how good a welder he is and how desperate the buyers is, I suppose.i would NEVER sell it to a friend myself. I'd feel bad if it broke on him. I don't want to be obligated to try fix it even if I thought it was his fault

there has got to be a way to fab a 3rd one.
I will have a look at the architecture tonight and see if I can rig something up.I had no idea this was that big of an issue and certainly was not anticipating that it would take the vehicle out!

IDK if there is any way you can give the project up and go with the latest one that HAS 3 brackets. They probably are all different and you would need to get a salvage yard to pick them all apart but ASSUMING it fits, that would be where I start. OTOH, if they use a different compressor that will NOT fit the new bracket, your way might have merit.
