Default Rear targa top storage bracket rubber

new to Corvette..today was the first time I’d removed the targa top from my Corvette. I stored in in the back, and all seemed fine..however, when I pulled it out of the cargo area, the rubber cushions pulled out of the brackets.

They looked like rubber strips just glued to the brackets. Looking online, it appears they might not be the correct ones for a ‘93. Are the ones in the link below the right ones for the car?

Look on Eckler or Wilcox, or others they have a pretty good pic of those rubber inserts and they are fairly cheap

If you have the ones that separated, why do you not just repair them if you say they were glued on?

It appears that they were glued on, because they are not the proper rubber parts for the later (1993) brackets...but I’m having problems finding out if that is correct. ..I’m hoping someone knows for certain, so I can repair this correctly.

As you have found there were two different brackets used. The cut over was supposedly in 1989, but my 92 had the old style. Could be the PO swapped them out as both will fit any car.

As far As I could tell no one makes the rubber piece for the old style. It was actually one U-shaped track not two separate pieces.

Here's were it gets fun. GM decided not to change the part number when the new bracket came out. Both have the same part number on them (per side).

So the only way to know which brackets you have is by looking at them.

If you have the new style bracket the ones you linked to in your first post are correct

You can get them from several vendors.

If you have the old brackets, hunt down a set of new ones.

Old Style

New Style

That’s exactly what I needed to know.

Thanks!

i found a set set on eBay for a reasonable price...according to the seller, the updated brackets weren’t used until 1994...everything I’ve read says 1989...but an awful lot of people like me have found the old style in post 1989 cars.

I would expect that all 'production' through '93 to have what in this thread has been called 'early'. Late '93? Maybe, but it would be very difficult to confirm.

They should have casting information with a part#

14089659 - L and 14089660 - R

GM is generally very consistent and the 'newer' I'd have thought would carny a casting number more consistent with the later 'service' part.

I've never untrimmed a '94+ interior but I'd expect these numbers as casting references.

10242355 - L and 10242356 -R

Old versions can also have 14049051 LH and 14049052 RH

Wondering If I can print one on the 3D printer.

My '93 had the old style. I ended up buying used brackets to bolt in. Check with one of the used corvette parts recycle. I've used a couple. Can't think of the names off hand. One was down south and the other in PA near the race track.

I just based my comment on your reference to '89 etc. The #'s you mention would have been OE on likely only '84 - '86 cars.

3D printing the bumper? I can't imagine it being a $$ saving project. All of the resellers seem to have them so if you actually need just add them to maybe another order to avoid some shipping.

If only the retention tip failed, like 'Arbee' mentioned - I don't know why adhesive couldn't work.

CC sells 'direct' - eBay and also Amazon

I've a friend who buys CC also ZIP and the ship he says is generally negotiable. He's been buying for years so maybe 'loyalty' matters.

OP - the seller you found knew correct usage. What year 'Galaxy500XL' ? All nice cars - some certainly considered more desirable.

I added those latest part numbers just so they could be found in this thread. It appears there are at least 3 part numbers identified here for each side.

As far as printing, the bumpers could be printed for probably a buck a piece. Once the file was built. Due to it's simplicity it would be about 15 minutes work to build the file. I just 3D print as a hobby.

I already have a printed insulator on the pin for the coolant tank. It's a discontinued part, and the few NOS ones I found were priced like they were made of gold. I have less than 50 cents in it.

My understanding is the brackets are no longer made and if they really are 94-96 only there is a finite supply. So at some time those may disappear as well. I look at 3D printing as a way of making unobtainable parts more than a cost savings.

heck, I could probably print an insert for the old style bracket if I had a good example. On mine one was missing and the other was pieces parts.

I've actually 'no interest' in 3D printing - is it a viable option for part replication? Certainly

It's good that you enjoy the 'tinkering' -

I ordered a left and right bracket from a seller on eBay, they arrived today.

Markings are. 14089660 RH
LH 14089659

They are in perfect condition, and cost me $16.50 each, shipping was free.

Are the decorative covers the same for both styles, or will I need different trim covers for the new ones?

Thanks to all for your help!

So you received the same as you had except that the cushions were in much better condition? The covers/trim remained the same I'm sure until there was a color change that affected interior trim.

No...I received the newer style, that use the small rubber cushions...my original brackets were the old style that have the wide pieces of rubber that are glued in. The rubber in the old ones were in bad shape, and the rubber cushions are no longer available.

The plastic support/bracket should have had a number molded into it. You said the car is a '93. The parts you received would have been original to your '93 and everything back to very likely late '86 or so. What was on the old ones you removed?

You're still keeping the year of the 500XL a secret it seems.

I’ve not pulled the old ones out yet..I’ll get back to you on that.

My old Galaxie was a Pagoda Green ‘64, with a black interior.
