Default Getting Gas - frustrations

Do you guys have problems with the gas pump prematurely shutting off? My '17 GS simply will not fill up at any gas station or from any empty/full level without having to restart the pump at least 5-6 times. I've tried a couple dozen different pumps across at least a dozen or more gas stations. I've tried starting with a nearly empty tank, 7/8 full tank, and everything in between - no difference.

It did happen, but not as badly, in my 2015 Silverado 1500. I found that with that truck if I refill with more than 1/2 tank to start with, then I don't have a problem. With the vette, it doesn't matter how much gas I start with - it will prematurely quit. A guy I work with has a 2015 Silverado and says it happens to him nearly every fill up.

This doesn't happen in my wife's 2017 Cadillac XT5. It didn't happen with my 2002 Z06. It didn't happen with my 2013 Silverado.

Seems like we should be able to fill up the car without having to restart the pump 5-6 times. Ridiculously frustrating.

No issue with a '17 Z06, well not consistently. Have had problems at some pumps when the filters are sketchy needing replacing...

I swear in the last month it has gotten much worse. I have to guess when to stop filling so I don't make a mess. Tried turning the nozzle different angles. No difference. Sometimes I pull away from the pump and realize it is not full. Real pain in the ***.

I know this doesn't help, but I have probably only had that happen a couple of times. 58,000 miles on the car. But I only use Chevron. Do you have issues with those stations?

Had you tried filling up with the pump at a lower pump fueling rate? It will take longer to fill-up but it should reduce the likli-hood of shutting the pump off prematurely.

Slow down! Most nozzles are set to pump gas at three speeds – slow, medium, and fast. Pumping at high speeds releases more gasoline vapors, which your nozzle pulls back in with a vapor recovery system most pumps are outfitted with. This means you could be paying for more gas than you receive. Pumping at a slower rate releases fewer vapors, which means you’re receiving more of the gas that you paid for.

I bought a used 2016 Z51 with 4600 miles on it now and have only filled up three times. The first two went flawlessly. On the last, at the same station, it started shutting off early and continued through the fill-up. So much so that I didn't trust it and over-filled which I believe the Owner's Manual says can hurt the system.

I found a place on the infotainment system that shows how many gallons were used and will try that to gauge when the tank is full next time.

I have. It still happens - just takes longer to happen.

I have experienced the same issue while filling my 2017 Z06. I found that rotating the handle about 90 degrees counter-clockwise so that the pump handle is positioned towards the rear of the car seems to work. Might be worth a try.

I'll give it another shot. I've tried various positions, but can't say that I rotated it that far. Thanks for the heads up.

Default Gas shutting off

My 2017 ZO6-I just don't put the nozzle in as far, and pump a little slower...works fine for me!

I believe you should explain this to the dealer and take it in.

Agreed. Will be due for an oil change soon, so I'll talk to them about it then.

With my experience in working in a gas station over 50 years ago, I'd say compared to back then the speeds now are slow, slower and much slower. In general, I've had no problems filling up.

This works for me most of the time.

I have only filled up my tank a few times since I bought my Corvette and I agree it is annoying having the pump shut off so easily. I’m always afraid I’m going to overfill it. I found pumping the gas very slow helps. No other car I have ever owned had this problem.

There have been many threads about this problem. You can do a search to read previous discussions and mitigation’s.

That said, I have encounter the problem of the nozzle shutting off after only a gallon or two pumped. The solution, turn the pump nozzle 180 degrees, the handle is now pointing up. You will have to hold it while pumping since it will not lock in place in that position.

This method works 100% of the time.

Someone stated early that all pumps pump in slow, medium, and fast depending on how hard you pull the handle. Unfortunately most new systems are either pumping (full) or they are off, no in between.

Have this problem on my new to me 2016 Z06. Finally got the gas in slowly after many shut offs. Can gas squirt out if we don't use the pumps auto-shutoff?
