Can someone tell me if this belt needs to be replaced. If you look closely, you can see a "rust" spot to the right of the belt. Does this mean that the belt has slipped and needs to be fixed and/or replaced? I uploaded a picture.

Is this the timing belt or called something else? Thank you.

That’s the serpentine belt. You don’t have a timing belt but a timing chain behind the water pump. It’s hard to say from the picture if that belt needs replaced. I’d need a clearer picture of the rib section of the belt and the slick part, not the side. Typically those belts are good for 50-100k miles. Sometimes more.

It is not a timing belt .

The belt 5 on the drawing is the Accessory Drive Belt that drive the waterpump pulley 4( with rust) , powersteering 7 and alternator 6 .
These units are driven by the rotation of the dampener 9 .

The timing is carried out by the timing chain shown on the photo

Your crank pulley might be moving forward. This is a common issue.

I believe the rust you are referring to is the hub that drives the water pump. You could clean it carefully with a wire brush and paint it.

On the belt, check and make sure it is fully seated on the crankshaft pulley. Then, with the engine running, look for wobble of the pulley itself.

And you probably want to change your coolant hoses.. The rubber parts in our cars
are going on 20 years old.. Not a good gamble

You should take a good look at all the pulleys. It appears something has shifted and is pushing the belt backwards from the path it used to follow. Look for one pulley the belt isn't on properly or that doesn't look in line with the others. The damper sometimes does that but even though the picture isn't the clearest it still looks OK.

The rust color is just the edge of the damper pulley - normal.

Is the car new to you? Maybe the harmonic damper was sliding forwards and got changed already?

Look at the water pump. The belt has been running in multiple locations on the pulley.

It is new to me. I've had it now for about 5 months. I was just looking under the hood and noticed the belt. It looks like it was running in the rusted looking area and now it's moved to the left. I'm not that mechanically inclined. Do you think I need to have a mechanic take a look at it?

I agree with Lionelhutz, looks like at one point in the past, the HB walked off and was probably replaced .

At this point, all you have to be concerned with is that there is NO wobble when car is running at idle. Easy to see if you look. Belt chirps is the sound you MAY hear when the HB is happy.

My comment was because I looked at the HB pulley - thought he meant the HB. If the belt is currently running that far on the water pump, it would be off.

We're all working off of a static picture.

I tried to video it. My hand was a little shaky. Does this help any? Thanks for all your help.

Its hard to tell if you have a wobble by that short vid, if you do, it is not that bad.
One thing for sure, if the HB separated to the point where it shifted the belt to make that rust mark, you sure in hell would see & hear it.

Just eye up the pulleys and the belt and if it all looks square then I wouldn't worry about it. It could have been the balancer failing in the past that caused that but it looks in line now and they don't fix themselves so it must have been fixed by the previous owner.

why do you think you need to replace the belt tensioner belt? what are the symptoms/noises you're having?

I am looking at the rust mark (just below the clamp screw and to the left) where it appears the belt has slid out of place. Where I have placed the red arrows, that part does move back and forth when the belt is moving. Not a lot but it does "wobble". It's not very loud. Actually the engine is pretty quiet.

that is belt tensioner, there should be 3 marks on the top of the lt side tensioner & t the rt side there should be one mark. If anything replace the belt tensioner. belt tensioner comes with the puller the belt is on there.
