Default Track Oil life

How long (events / miles / days / hours) do you run the oil on track in your vettes?

I have a 2016 CTS-V with the LT4 and I have to run 5W-40 on track, I Completed my 4th day (4 - 30 min sessions per day) on it and I'm about to switch back and trying to figure out if I should save it for the next event or recycle it.

I've been changing the oil every two track days, running AMSOIL 10/40. My oil temps without a cooler are at 300F, so I don't like running it more than two days. Hell, I'm not comfortable running that temp for one day. I have a DRM kit waiting to be installed.

What are your oil temps?

The times I've looked, I'm in the 270-285 range. Obvioulsy heavier car, but larger cooling area. I noticed after the last go around the oil was dark as if it had been in the car 3K miles, but only 50-100 track miles.

When tracking my 12 GS A6 I changed oil after every weekend (typically 4.5 hours of track time), my oil temps would exceed 300 degrees every 30 minute session.

Now I am running a 13 GS with M6, much cooler temps (thanks to M6 and dry sump) usually around 235 or so. I have extended the change out to 2 weekends (about 9.5 hrs track time).

Using Mobil 1 5w30

Also change diff and trans every 24 hrs track time.

Fluids so much cheaper than parts.

Do a blackstone analysis, it will tell you for certain. I was changing it every event. I had a blackstone done and it said i could easily do two events. I did two and then sent it to blackstone and they said three should be ok. I haven't done three events on a change yet, but I'll do it this year. Point is, this test will tell you for certain, everything else is just someones opinion.

Only 1 way to really know.. do your own sample
This was 1400+ street miles and 3 days, sat-mon, (300ish track miles)

Pure track car. Ls6 with 80K plus miles. 5th race season. A little more often than once a year with amsoil 15w50. Roughly 20 hours.

Thanks everyone, definitely need to do a blackstone analysis. This time around I decided to recycle it as we are moving and having to move used oil sounds like a mess waiting to happen. But next go round I will send it off.

I let the OLM guide me. You can see it change more rapidly because of an event and running higher oil temps along with higher revs. Typically, I change the oil once per season. Been doing that with no issues for over twenty years even when I run 15 or more track days per season.

Dan,

Whats an event: two days, 4 sessions at 25 min per day?
What oil / viscosity.
Typical oil temp?

Thanks

Too many variables to tie it to a specific number of days or hours. Driving style (ie average rpm), amount of time at high rpm, specific oil being used, average oil temp, etc. all make a difference. For instance, what my car sees at Buttonwillow is a lot different than Willow Springs. January temps look a lot different than July. I figure the OLM is calibrated to 5W30, so if anything I'm conservative.

YMMV

I was having mine tested at 19 hours on track. Blackstone came back and said it looked fine, next time try 25 hours. M1 15W50.

An event is either SCCA, PCA, or Chin, so 4-7 sessions at 20-30 minutes per. Typically two days, some are three (PCA at WGI is usually 3 days, 4 sessions per day). I'll go to TNIA for a day here and there but i don't usually count it in the event tally.

Standard Mobil-1 15W-50 5qt jugs from Wal-Mart ($22.88)

Running a DRM large stand alone setrab oil cooler. In the warmer months 260's have seen as high as 270's on really hot ambient days.

I do a blend of 1 to 3 day events. I'm a fan of Chin which puts 3-4 days of wear on compared to anyone else's 2 day events. So, I kind of blend them together. For example, I just did 2 days at SP with SCCA and I'm going to WGI with Chin in May for 2 days. I may go to Pocono in April for a TNIA event just for some mid week go fast. I'll wait to change it until after WGI either way. It ends up being 21 or 22 sessions either way.

Happy to share my last Blackstone, PM me your email and I'll send it over.

Dan

This may be an odd question...but has anyone sent a sample in to Blackstone and actually had it come back saying that the oil SHOULDN'T be used?

I have yet to see anyone say that, and it brings about some questions.

Thanks for the info!

I've read a few articles about FTIR oil analysis and happen to have one at the office. I plan on testing a sample during my next oil change. It won't identify any metallic materials but will be good for a before / after comparison of the oil itself.
