Default Summer Road Trip - Need Your Input

My wife and I are beginning to plan our summer cross country road-trip. We start out from our home in Portland Oregon heading to Charleston, South Carolina we plan to stay in Charleston for 3 days. This year we will be driving a more southern route (see below). We expect the outward leg of the trip to Charleston South Carolina to take 8-9 days because we are in no hurry. We have not yet thought about the route back home but we do know we will not be heading up the east coast, been there done that.

I am looking to those who have knowledge of the cities listed below or familiar with the route to give us your insight on the must see sights along the way, great places to stay and any other relevant travel information.

Route of Travel (also designated stop for the night cities)
Oregon - Reno Nevada - Las Vegas - Albuquerque NM - Oklahoma City Oklahoma- Memphis Tennessee - Birmingham Alabama - Atlanta Georgia - Charleston South Carolina

While I've driven all the various parts of that route, if there was one "must see" I would say it is between number 3 & 5.

Take some time and travel along Route 66. There are a lot of great things to see, some pretty impressive guide books and web sites. Here's one to get you started:

Now that's going to be fun Maxie. Your route takes you right along Route 66 from Arizona through Oklahoma. Many parts of the old road won't slow you down that much if you are on a schedule. Just a thought, and if you would like anymore info just drop me a PM. We've made five different runs on Route 66 since 2010, and planning on another this fall.

Drop in at Sedona Arizona which is not to far from the Grand Canyon. You might never want to leave. Monument Valley is an awesome sight in North East Arizona. Lotta movies (Westerns) filmed in these locations. Stunning vistas in AZ...bring your HD camera.

When you are in Memphis, stop by Rendezvous and eat some of the best dry rub ribs on the planet.

Pick this book up for the Route 66 section; https://smile.amazon.com/Route-66-EZ...+66+guide+book
It is the best book I have found, EZ to follow east or west bound

Sedona area, very cool stop but a little pricey; take time to see Jerome Mining town too.

The Grand Canyon 1 hr north of Williams; great day trip.

Winslow AZ; stop for lunch at La Posada in the old railroad station just east of the shops.

Shamrock TX, check out the old Conoco gas station and have dinner across the street at Big Vern's Steak House.

Have an awesome trip

Jerry McClanahan's EZ Guide is the best guide out there. I don't leave home without it if I'm heading to the Mother Road.

This is the route I am looking to take this summer with my wife. Starting and ending in San Francisco (home). Hopefully I am hitting all the good places with this 2,890 mile loop. Maybe taking 11 days or so. I was mapping it out from San Francisco and once I got to Washington, I was like, instead of coming back down Interstate 5, why not head over to Yellowstone (I have never been).

OP: Your trip looks to be an absolutely fantastic trip. Just what these cars are made for.

Carlos: Yellowstone will be a tremendous addition to the trip!

Is it Charles Vergos' Rendezvous?

at 6 head north to mecca and drive the track as well as seeing the museum, south to smokies to do the tail of the dragon, then to ashville to biltmore to take a pic of the vette in front of that mansion captioned "my life is simple, I only accept the best" east to charlotte to the motor speedway or billy graham land, down 77 to columbia and straight on 26 till morning. or chas, whichever comes first.

I would hit tail of the dragon and cherohala skyway on the return trip, not very far from SC. Looks like awesome fun.

My wife and I this past summer drove to Yellowstone, fun trip. On your road trip I HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking U.S. 84 to Mountain Home then take Highway 20 (Argo Hwy) to Idaho Falls. This road was built for Corvettes! LONG STRAIGHTWAYS, road is in excellent condition, an occasional car or truck. You can laterally go as fast as you want...150+. It also has long sweeping turns. So fun! You can also visit Craters of the Moon National Park.

Once you arrive in Idaho Falls take U.S. 26 (Swan Valley Road) to Jackson Hole Wyoming. Unbelievably scenic. it’s worth spending two nights in Jackson Hole. From Jackson Hole take Hwy 191 North to Yellowstone. At the city of Moose (13 miles north of Jackson) enter the Grand Teton National Park this drive rivals any road I have ever driven. You will have amazing vistas and up close views of the Grand Teton Mountains. This road takes you right into the south gate of Yellowstone. It’s truly a 2 for 1 drive. You will remember the drive for years.

I lived in Idaho Falls years ago and took many day trips to Jackson and Yellowstone and drove the Arco Hwy (20) many times so if you want addition info just send me a PM. I can recommend a new luxury hotel (not too pricing for) Jackson and can recommend a highly rated restaurants in Jackson, it’s a must for dinner.

I saw that road and looked it up. I think your advice is exactly the type of advice I need.
