Default ZR1 brake fluid and burnishing

Does anyone know whether the ZR1 has DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid installed?

Also, is the brake burnishing procedure the same as on the Z06?

Has anyone looked to see if the ZR1 owners manual is online? I wonder if it's just the 2019 OM in which case it will say. I'd expect it to be the same as the Z07 though in both regards.

Track Events and Competitive Driving

Danger: High-performance features are intended for use only on closed tracks by experienced and qualified drivers and should not be used on public roads. High-speed driving, aggressive cornering, hard braking, and other high-performance driving can be dangerous. Improper driver inputs for the conditions may result in loss of control of the vehicle, which could injure or kill you or others. Always drive safely.


Participating in track events or other competitive driving without following the instructions provided may affect the vehicle warranty. See the warranty manual before using the vehicle for racing or other competitive driving. See Competitive Driving Mode.


A manual transmission is recommended for extended track usage at higher ambient temperatures. Consult the Track Preparation Guide for additional information. See your dealer.


Be sure to follow all service procedures before driving the vehicle at track events or competitively.


Prior to each track event and again before re-entering the public road system, tighten the wheel nuts with a torque wrench to the proper torque specification. See Capacities and Specifications.


Engine Sound Management Setting
Caution: Do not place the vehicle in Engine Sound Management – Stealth mode. Damage could result to exhaust valve actuators.


Engine Oil
Caution: If the vehicle is used for track events and competitive driving, the engine may use more oil than it would with normal use. Low oil levels can damage the engine. Check the oil level often and maintain the proper level. See Engine Oil.


The engine is factory filled with 0W-40 dexos2 oil. For LT1 and LT4 engines only, 0W-40 dexos2 engine oil is approved for both track and street use. 15W-50 full synthetic engine oil may also be used for track use, but after track use must be changed back to 0W-40 dexos2 for street use. If 0W-40 dexos2 oil is not available, 5W-30 dexos1 full synthetic engine oil may be used for street use. If 5W-30 dexos1 is used, it must be changed to 0W-40 dexos2 or 15W-50 full synthetic engine oil for track use.


For the LT5 engine, SAE 15W-50 full synthetic engine oil must be used for track use, but after track use must be changed back to 0W-40 dexos2 for street use.


Z51 Performance Package, Grand Sport, Z06, and ZR1: Check the oil level often during track events and competitive driving and keep the level at or near 0.5 L (0.5 qt) above the upper mark that shows the proper operating range on the engine oil dipstick. After the competitive driving, remove excess oil so that the level on the dipstick is not above the upper mark that shows the proper operating range.


Stingray without Z51 Performance Package: Additional oil fill above the upper mark on the dipstick is not recommended for track events or other competitive driving. Check the oil level often during racing or other competitive driving and keep the level at or near the upper mark that shows the proper operating range on the engine oil dipstick. After the competitive driving, remove excess oil so that the level on the dipstick is not above the upper mark that shows the proper operating range.

Fuel
LT1 Engine93 octane (or higher) unleaded gasoline is required.


LT4 Engine93 octane (or higher) unleaded gasoline is required. 100 octane (or higher) unleaded gasoline is recommended at the track when temperatures are above 30 °C (86 °F) to maximize powertrain performance and improve longevity of components within the powertrain.


LT5 Engine93 octane (or higher) unleaded gasoline is required. 100 octane (or higher) unleaded gasoline is recommended to maximize powertrain performance and improve longevity of components within the powertrain.


Caution: Some high octane fuels contain additives and compounds that may damage the vehicle and void the vehicle warranty. See Prohibited Fuels.

Automatic Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid should be changed after every 15 hours of track usage. Any transmission level set or change should be performed at your dealer.

Manual Transmission Fluid

Manual transmission fluid should be changed after every 15 hours of track usage.

Load Limit

Z51 Performance Package Only: Limit vehicle load to the driver only, with no other cargo. Inflate tires to 180 kPa (26 psi) and drive at a maximum speed of 280 km/h (174 mph).

Grand Sport, Z06, and ZR1 Only: Limit vehicle load to the driver only, with no other cargo. Inflate tires to 180 kPa (26 psi) and drive at a maximum speed of 296 km/h (184 mph).

Wheel Alignment

Caution: Using these wheel alignment settings may cause excessive tire wear. Only use these wheel alignment settings for racing or competitive driving. Excessive tire wear is not covered under the vehicle warranty.

ZR1 FEB suspension equipped vehicles can be lowered 12 mm in the front for optimal track performance. Lowering the vehicle should be completed prior to the track suspension alignment. The front spring outboard ends must be unloaded from the front control arms in order to adjust the spring cushion adjuster screws upward by approximately 6–9 mm to achieve the lowered condition. Driving on the public roads in this condition is not recommended.

Caution: Failure to unload the front spring outboard ends before adjusting the spring cushion adjuster screws could damage the spring.


If the vehicle is a Z51, Grand Sport, Z06, or ZR1, the racing and competitive driving wheel alignment settings should be set as described here:

•Z51 Performance Package – remove one washer from each upper control arm to body bolt attachment (both front and rear).

Grand Sport, Z06, and ZR1 models – do not remove washers from front or rear upper control arm bolts.
Proceed by adjusting the lower control arm cam bolts until alignment is within specifications. Alignment values are targets. See your dealer for tolerances.

After track use, reinstall washers and reset to factory alignment settings.

Front (per corner)
•Caster: +7.0 degrees
•Camber: -2.0 degrees
•Toe: 0.05 degrees toe in
Rear (per corner)
•Caster: 0 degrees
•Camber: -2.0 degrees
•Toe: 0.05 degrees toe in
Thrust Angle: 0 degrees

Rear Axle Fluid

Caution: During a first time track or racing event, high rear axle temperatures can occur. Damage could be caused to the rear axle and would not be covered by the vehicle warranty. Do not drive as long or as fast the first time the vehicle is driven on the track or raced.

Axles must have 2414 km (1,500 mi) before being used in track driving.


The rear axle fluid temperatures may be higher than when driving in severe conditions. Drain and refill with new fluid after the first racing or competitive driving event, and then after every 24 hours of racing or competitive driving. See Recommended Fluids and Lubricants.


General Information

If reduced performance is experienced during track events or competitive driving, turning off the A/C will help to improve engine performance.


Maintain a mixture of 40% DEX-COOL coolant and 60% clean, drinkable water to optimize engine performance.


The front license plate bracket or aero panel should be removed for track events and competitive driving to improve engine performance.

Brakes

Warning: Braking above 200 mph:

Applying and sustaining full force braking at speeds exceeding 200 mph (322 km/h) can cause serious damage to the braking system. At any speed, braking must be performed in a smooth and controlled manner, but at these speeds specifically, lower initial brake pedal efforts are recommended.


Brake Cooling

If additional brake cooling is required, the grille mesh in the lower corners of the front grille in front of the brake duct can be removed. This is not reversible, and a replacement grille will not be covered by the vehicle warranty. If this is done, it is recommended that the gap between the fascia and the cooling duct be taped over.


Brake Fluid

Replace existing brake fluid with a qualified high performance brake fluid from a sealed container. Brake fluid with a dry boiling point >310 °C (590 °F) is qualified. If high performance brake fluid is used, replace it with GM approved brake fluid before driving on public roads. If high performance brake fluid is in the vehicle and the age of the brake fluid is over a month old or unknown, replace the brake fluid before track events and competitive driving. Do not use silicone or DOT-5 brake fluids.


Brake Burnishing

New brake pads must be burnished before racing or other competitive driving.

Caution: Performing the brake burnish procedure on a base brake system can result in brake damage.

Caution: The new vehicle break-in period should be completed before performing the brake burnish procedure, otherwise damage may occur to the powertrain/engine. See New Vehicle Break-In.

Caution: Brake pedal fade will occur during any track burnish procedure and can cause brake pedal travel and force to increase. This could extend stopping distance until the brakes are fully burnished.

When this procedure is performed as instructed, it will not damage the brakes. The brake pads will smoke and produce an odor. The braking force and pedal travel may increase. After the procedure, the brake pads may appear white at the rotor contact.

Perform this procedure only on dry pavement, in a safe manner, and in compliance with all local and state ordinances/laws regarding motor vehicle operation.

Brake Burnishing Procedure (Z51 Performance Package, Grand Sport with J56, and Z06 with J56)

 1. Apply the brakes 25 times starting at 100 km/h (60 mph) to 50 km/h (30 mph) while decelerating at 0.4 g. This is a medium brake application. Drive for at least 1 km (0.6 mi) between applying the brakes. This first step may be skipped if there are more than 320 km (200 mi) on the brake pads.

 2. Repeatedly apply the brakes from 100 km/h (60 mph) to 25 km/h (15 mph) while decelerating at 0.8 g. This is a hard brake application, without activating the Antilock Brake System (ABS). Drive for at least 1 km (0.6 mi) between stops. Repeat until the brake pedal travel starts to increase. Depending on conditions, this should take no longer than 25 brake applications.

 3. Cool down: Drive at 100 km/h (60 mph) for approximately 15 km (10 mi) without using the brakes.

 4. Apply the brakes 25 times from 100 km/h (60 mph) to 50 km/h (30 mph) while decelerating at 0.4 g. This is a medium brake application. Drive for at least 1 km (0.6 mi) between applications.


Street High Performance Brake Burnishing Procedure (Grand Sport with J57, Z06 with J57, and ZR1)

 1. From a stop, accelerate as rapidly as possible without activating traction control to a speed of 100 km/h (60 mph).

 2. Use enough pedal force to completely stop the vehicle in four to five seconds. If ABS activates, braking is too hard.

 3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 – 50 times. This should take about 10 minutes.

 4. After completing the 50 stops, cool the brakes by driving for 8 km (5 mi) at 100 km/h (60 mph).
As with all high performance brake systems, some amount of brake squeal is normal.


Racing/Track Brake Burnishing Procedure (Grand Sport with J57, Z06 with J57, and ZR1)

This procedure should only be run on a track and only on dry pavement.

Caution: Brake pedal fade will occur during this track burnish procedure and can cause brake pedal travel and force to increase. This could extend stopping distance until the brakes are fully burnished.

 1. Drive a normal first lap, not too aggressively.

 2. Laps 2 and 3 should be gradually driven faster and more aggressively, while allowing for reduced brake output and increased stopping distance due to brake fade.

 3. Drive Lap 4 near full speed, while allowing for reduced brake output and increased stopping distance due to brake fade.

 4. Laps 5 and 6 should be cool down laps.

 5. Lap 7 should be normal driving or an easy out lap.
Exhaust Cooling Hardware (ZR1)
The exhaust cooling hardware should be installed prior to any track event. These components will help cool the exhaust system.


To install the closeout plates and deflectors:

 1. Install the 12 U-nuts onto the tunnel brace. Align the threaded holes in the U-nuts with the holes in the tunnel brace.

 2. Install the two closeout plates over the holes.
Install the two deflectors over the holes, with the shorter one in front.

 3. Torque all the fasteners to 9 Y (6.6 lb ft).

When the track event is complete, remove the closeout plates and deflectors and store them for the next track event.

Rear Adjustable Performance Wing (If Equipped)




The Rear Adjustable Performance Wing can be adjusted up for greater downforce during a track event.

To change the angle of the rear wing, remove the rear attaching bolts and move them to the upper hole. Tighten the bolts to 9 Y (6.6 lb ft). Return the wing to the factory location following the track event. Every time the wing is adjusted, re-apply threadlocker to the attachment bolts. See Recommended Fluids and Lubricants.

Front Compartment Air Deflector Panel

Prior to the track event, when ambient temperatures are above 27 °C (80 °F), the panel between the front fascia extension and the front cradle can be removed to maximize cooling air flow to the steering gear power assist motor.

To remove the air deflector:


 1. Remove the four front (2) and three rear (4) front compartment air deflector screws.

 2. Remove the forward push pin (1).

 3. Remove the front compartment air deflector (3) by tipping the rear down and sliding it out from under the lower deflector panel.

When the track events are complete, reinstall this panel.

Z07 Performance Package

Z06 with the Z07 Performance Package has installed Stage 2 and Stage 3 Aero Packages, which consist of a front splitter with short end caps, rocker panel extensions, and a rear spoiler.

Stage 3 Aero components are delivered but not installed on the vehicle. These are intended to be installed for track use only. The components include:

•Front splitter tall end caps that replace the front splitter short end caps

•A center transparent wicker bill for the rear spoiler
Warning: Changing the following track settings could reduce tire traction and could cause a crash. Do not change the track settings.

The track settings for the Z07 Performance Package with the Stage 3 Aero Package are:

•The front splitter tall end caps installed

•The center transparent wicker bill installed all the way up on the rear spoiler

•The Driver Mode Selector in Track Mode

Stingray with Performance Package-Carbon Fiber (CFZ)
The Stingray with Performance Package-Carbon Fiber (CFZ) has an installed aero package which consists of a front splitter with short end caps, rocker panel extensions, and a rear spoiler. A center transparent wicker bill for the rear spoiler is delivered but not installed. This is intended to be installed for track use only.


Front Brake Cooling Duct Kit (Z06 and ZR1)
The following installation procedure is for Z06/ZR1 vehicles and should be installed prior to any track events or high speed straight runs. The cooling ducts should be installed prior to any track events or high speed straight runs.

To install the cooling ducts and deflector:

 1. Remove the front wheels. Refer to the procedure in the vehicle service manual. Steps 2, 3, and 4 are optional on certain vehicles.



 2. Remove the adhesive tape from the rubber pads and install them on the front airbox as shown. Allow it to dry for five minutes.



 3. Remove the adhesive tape from the rubber pads and install them on the rear airbox as shown. Allow it to dry for five minutes.



 4. Position the u-nut on the upper duct.



 5. Position the rear airbox and snap the tabs into the front airbox around the lower control arm.



 6. Position the upper duct and snap it into the tabs of the front and rear airbox assembly.



 7. Install the control arm deflector to the upper duct using the screw. Do not tighten at this time.



 8. Install the control arm deflector to the lower control arm using the self tapping screws. Do not tighten at this time.

 9. Install the two self tapping screws to the control arm through both sides of the airbox cavities. Do not tighten at this time.

10. Torque all five screws to 4 Y (35 lb inch).

11. Repeat the procedure for the opposite side of the vehicle.

12. Install the front wheels. Refer to the procedure in the vehicle service manual.

After the track event, remove the additional track cooling hardware installed prior to the track event for street use.

Wheel Blocker
The following installation procedure is for Z06 vehicles with the J56 brake package and should be installed prior to any track events. The wheel blocker helps improve the cooling of the brake rotor.


Caution: The wheel blocker is for track use only. After a track event, remove the wheel blocker and reinstall the original splash shield. Failure to reinstall the original parts may lead to damage to the wheel blocker, noise, premature brake pad and rotor wear, and high speed wet braking.

To install the wheel blocker:


 1. Remove the front wheels. Refer to the procedure in the vehicle service manual.

 2. Remove the brake caliper (1) from the steering knuckle. Do not disconnect the brake hose. Refer to the procedure in the vehicle service manual.

 3. Remove the brake rotor retaining fastener (2) and then remove the brake rotor (3).

 4. Remove the two splash shield fasteners (4).

 5. Remove the splash shield (5).

 6. Install the wheel blocker (1).

 7. Install the three wheel blocker fasteners (2). Torque to 10 Y (89 lb inch).


 8. Install the rotor (1) with the fastener (2). Torque to 10 Y (89 lb inch).


 9. Install the caliper (1) with the two fasteners (2). Torque to 220 Y (162 lb ft).

10. Repeat the procedure for the opposite side of the vehicle.

11. Reinstall the wheels using the specified lug nut torque. Refer to the procedure in the vehicle service manual.

12. After a track event, repeat the steps to reinstall the original splash shield.

Like it says, at the Rolex 24 Corvette Corral earlier this year Harlan Charles and Mobil 1 both gave us briefings that starting with the 2019 model year the factory oil fill would be the new Mobil 1 0W-40. And they both said that the 0W-40 would be good for the street or track.

Harlan also said all the cars would get DOT 4 brake fluid as well.

However, it's very curious that the Owner Manual info you put up says that 0W-40 is good for the street and track for the LT1 and LT4, but with the LT5 you need to put in 15W-50 for the track, then swap back to 0W-40 for the street!?!?

Oh well, I guess the LT5 just has some different quirks to it than the other C7 engines.

Looks like you miss quoted the oils for the LT5.

For the LT5 engine, SAE 15W-50 full synthetic engine oil must be used for track use, but after track use must be changed back to 0W-40 dexos2 for street use.

Knowing GM there will likely be a bulletin that states the new ESP 0w40 will be acceptable for all uses. They probably haven't noticed the typo in the owners manual.

You mean the type where they list the ZTK suspension as "FEB" instead of "FE8"?

Tadge did mention in hist response to the oil question that the LT5 may have different requirements for track use. I guess the good news is that the extra 15W50 I have sitting around won't go to waste.

I also thought the additional specificity on transmission and rear oil changes was new (every 15 and 25 hours). I remember the warning to change the diff after first track use but nothing about regular changes. I guess I better up my maintenance game.

Oh, and the recommendation to lower the front of the ZR1 was also interesting. I guess that is to get more rake and make the aero work better.

That was chock full of interesting info - thanks for posting!

I believe lowering the front of the ZR1 gets the front under wing closer to the ground and this makes the front wing more effective.

Luckily, since I am not tracking or racing my ZR1, I will not have to worry about any of this, just like I didn't with my '12 ZR1.

I am planning on flushing the brake fluid and replace with Motul 600 before tracking this weekend. Any one know the capacity of the ZR1 system? I could not locate it in the manual or thru a quick search of this forum.

I believe its been covered here or elsewhere that the ESP 0-40 Mobil 1 is different than the Mobil 1 0-40 thats been available for years. (It may be referred to as Euro blend). I do not believe the ESP 0-40 Mobil 1 is available anywhere except at a GM dealer yet. We were told it should become widely available elsewhere by year end. Please correct me if someone has found it elsewhere already.

Made the change to Mobile 1 15w-50 today, along with Motul 600 brake fluid. Track on Friday...

I have been using 5w50 mobil1 which can be bought at Oreillys
