I have the Uniden R3...
and I notice that when the LEOs are parked perpendicular to the highway using the Ka band that the detector is not as effective range wise. Do you experience the same? Thanks.
Uniden should be the correct spelling.

Are you sure their gun is pointing your direction? You might be picking up the backend. Some cruisers have a fixed gun the rear also.

You realize its a radar detector and not a police detector.
The coppers can be facing any direction and if the radar is turned off then you wont know until you see them.
Sometimes one of them will do exactly this, and wait until they think they see someone speeding, then turn the radar on.
Some people call this instant on.
Either way, if I get caught in this sort of trap, I congratulate the copper. It means he was doing his/her job.
I use Waze as part of my counter measures to help with this exact issue.

I got a KA signal yesterday from a good 1/2 mile or more. I was heading West and he was traveling south across an over pass. I watched him come on to the Higheay. It had plenty of range. This morning I got a signal on a windy road probably a mile away. Detector went off as soon as I made a turn. Passed come coming at me maybe 20-30 seconds later. Again great range.

Radar guns are generally unidirectional, 90% of the radar energy is directed straight out of the front of the gun, but some does radiate sideways. So, if the gun is pointed across the road, you have much less signal strength for a detector to pick-up.

I got hit with KA twice today (NY). I could not believe the range the R3 has. Incredible. The radar weenie forums tout it as the range leader. So far I agree.
And I think I have the BSM under control. K filtering, K narrow and 70%. When I first got it I thought I wasted my money. Now that I have it figured out it’s an exceptional device.

Now that makes sense. I just talked to a LEO next door neighbor of mine. (YIKES!) He said what you said.

Great detector except for thoughts on what I asked. I have picked up the Ka from as far as 2 miles away when the squad car is running parallel with the highway as I am.

The radar beam spreads considerably, more like a shotgun than a rifle. Actually, more like a blunderbuss.
Compared to laser, which spreads very little.
And of course there is reflection from sign, other vehicles, etc.

I've noticed that my R3 has such good range that on an urban depressed freeway at the very top of the grade I get radar 3,4,5,6 miles out (if the radar is parallel to us). As I go down into the valleys (to go under bridges) the range is decreased, maybe to 3 miles, but it's nice to know that even in an urban setting going through tons of STUFF I still get a very clean radar notification.
K band is shorter range, but I think it's due to the K band mostly is doors and "speed signs" I've yet to see an actual cop with K Band.
If you get popped by POP the R3 actually tells you, I was driving down the freeway and it nearly scared the **** out of me because the noise is different the detector flashed POP, then it went away and came back in about 10 seconds. Sure enough a mile down the road I saw a cop. It was able to pick up him hitting the cars in front of me.
