Default Por-15 Paint

I'm trying to paint my exhaust manifolds. I've put one coat of Por-15 Gray on them. To me it looks like battle ship gray and it's shiny. I know I need to put another coat on them but I'm not sure if this color is the same color other people have used. Several people have said use Por-15 "Exhaust Gray" is that a different color gray than plain old Por-15 Gray? I figured once I put the exhaust on and they go through a few heat cycles the shininess will go away.

Any and All knowledgable responses will be Greatly Appreciated.

Thanks

I used the POR 15 cast iron exhaust gray. It definitely is not shiny. I gave mine two coats, and 5 years later they still look great.

Randy:

If you search this C2 forum, there should be pics of exhaust manifolds painted with the hi-temp POR exhaust manifold paint.

I did a quick search on the internet and came up with one from a old Ford...... but the look is the same whether Ford or Chevy.

https://www.google.com/search?q=por+...8lkUzgdkncQ8M:

Hope this helps. I think you need to use a stripper or sand to clean up the old gray paint before coating with the exhaust gray.

I use stove paint and have also used steam radiator paint in different hues. Stuff is cheap, and lasts for years and years. Hardware stores carry it.

Year ago I purchased POR 15 cast iron gray that everyone raved about. Open the can and the color was anything but gray. Kind of blue black. I think they just put what ever color is laying around in a can and call it gray.

and I have used this type of paint also and it does work...as long as the prep is correct...just like about everything. PREP is everything.

I have used the POR-15...and I have had the cast iron colored heat coating applied on them....and the manifold dressing that you have to keep up on. So many different ways to do it ..and it all depends on the person and what they want it to look like.

Not shiny. This is what they looked like prior to running them on the car and they look the same today after driving with them for 2 years.
Applied with a foam brush.

This is my ‘66 L79 done with POR 15 Factory manifold grey in 2002 which now has about 30k miles. Looks as good today as the day they were done.

I think media blasting would be much easier and faster

i tihink you will have to get the old stuff off the manifolds before you apply the por-15. i like cast iron gray. they also make it in silver and it looks good. after you get them back on the car, start your car outside your work area and let it run till it gets up to operating temp. you will get a lot of smoke that is normal untill this stuff cures.

If the paint you used is not high temp (1500*F) it will burn/ smoke off with a horrible and probably toxic fume. Sand blast, and recoat with the proper finish.

Trust me media blasting it off took me longer that originally blasting the 50 year old rust off. After realizing I was using the wrong paint, I had painted them in the morning and it dawned on me later that afternoon it was the wrong color. I put paint stripper on them. About half the paint came off using stripper. I started trying to remove it with a wire wheel. That was time consuming also. Yesterday I media blasted the first one after getting it stripped I used a torch to heat the left over paint on the last one then media blasted it.

I do have the correct "Manifold Gray" now.

Thanks

I know you did not ask...and I am guessing that with you using the POR-15 manifold paint...you are NOT worried about judges that will dink you for every little thing.

In the photo below...when I do manifolds where this critical judging stuff will not be a factor. I use my die grinder and sanders and clean up any of the excessive casting flash and parting lines from the mold like what you can see in the red circles I put in your photo. I like doing it so there are not rough edges for crap to collect and so on.

Guy in my area said he would charge me $125 for ceramic coating if I did the sand blasting, which I did. $175.00 if he did the blasting.

I put new 2 1/2 inch manifolds on my car last winter. I had them ceramic coated and they looked great. By June most of the ceramic coating had peeled off. The local shop that coated them offered to do them again but I choose to paint them with Por 15.

Spoke with a supplier of POR15 for the Factor Manifold Gray paint and they said that name does not come up in their system for POR15. They said that the High Temp Heat Resistant - Manifold Gray as in the photo below is what is available. Anyone know if this is the same, just new labeling?

Thank you for your help,

(Sorry for the picture being sideways.... does not come up like that on my computer. Not sure how to correct....)
