Tire thoughts?
with the state of our roads i was thinking about more rubber between me and the road . Wondering if 275 50 17s would fit without rubbing? any thoughts appreciated!

You need to look for 275 40 17 tires, that is the option for these cars.
4x 9.5 x 17 rims with 270 40 17 front and back.
Standard is 8.5 x 17 front with 255 40 17
and 9.5 x17 rear with 275 40 17 tires.
You wont have any trouble with 275 40 17 front and back, its what I have on my C4.

92 did not have staggered wheels and tires. That started in 93. However z07 and z51 continued to have 275 40 17 on the 9.5 wheels front and rear.

255/50 R 17 tires will work. I’ve been running these all around for several years. I think they offer a good compromise, but few tires are available in this size. Most here will scoff at the idea of such a tall tire on a C4. These are slightly stretched on a 17 x 9.5 wheel, but that’s ok with me.
Originally, I wanted to evaluate a 27” tire on the rear, so I tried a pair of these instead of the (now) obsolete M/T 295/45R17 Et Street drag radials. These will still spin from a 2nd gear roll up 70 mph, so next iteration will likely be a 28” Hoosier quick time pro on a 16” wheel.
Eventually put same tire on the front in order to help keep my headers from dragging. Even with the taller tires and flattened tubes, there’s only about 2” of ground clearance.

The extra height will also make a difference is the speedo and odometer readout. A taller tire will show a lower indicated speed.
And as mentioned, a 275/50-17 tire may be hard to find. And tire manufacturers are quick to stop producing a specific tire size if the sales volume drops off.

If this is a 2.59 A4 the 27 inch tire will hurt performance in stop and go traffic. You will notice the difference even with the 3.07 and 3.45. It would be manageable with the m6, if the skip shift is disabled. You want to avoid lugging the engine.

That tire is pretty tall.
You might consider 255/45/17 tires. They are the right height as used on the front of '93-'96 C4's and still have the stock '92 9.5" rims within the tire's recommended rim widths. They will offer a little more sidewall to help absorb the bad roads.
Depending on brand/model of tires though some could look a little narrow while other brand/models of tires will look ok even though they are the same numerical size.
good luck.

I know what you mean about crap roads. Ours are rural and are beat by trucks, baking sun and snow. The performance tires my '96 came with were like riding on bowling *****.
I have 9.5's all the way around. I stuck with the stock size for those rims and went with these, I believe in H rating but I'd have to look. If you just drive it and don't race, they improved my ride immensely. Just for cruising around, they handle fine. I also wanted an all weather tire so I didn't have to park it unless it got really gnarly outside.
