Default 93 Steering Wheel cracking leather on the top only

Ruby has the original wheel on the column, from time and I tend to drive with my hands on the top of the wheel and it seems to be taking its toll.

Rest of the wheel is near perfect condition, just the top has the minor cracking happening.

Anyone know of any way to repair or close up the cracks to give the wheel some more life?

I know that a few times I noticed when I used Windex to clean up some items in the car, I'd give a quick pass over the wheel and it "seemed" to close it up for a short time, done that maybe once or twice but definitely not a regular thing as I know the ammonia isn't good for leather....just a casual observation that it "seemed" to make it feel a bit better.

Anyone have any advice on how to possibly repair this?

TY.

303 protectant may help.

Does this make the wheel "slippery"?

You could sand it down then use some leather filler putty and dye to get it to match.

Personally I'd just buy a steering wheel cpver from redline goods or something. Maybe add some more padding and thicken the wheel up some.

First the only way to fix it is replace or recover, now you can make it better by applying one of the products kittmaster has listed or some good leather treatment. Apply it heavy and let it it sit overnight or longer if you can than clean off do this many times working it in well.

It happens to cars of this age left out in the sun for long periods of time.

Default Repairing sun damage on the steering wheel

That's exactly what I did to mine. I sanded the top of the wheel where the worst damage was. I used fairly fine sandpaper. Think it was 320 grit. Afterwards I used black leather dye on it and applied some leather preservative (can't remember the brand).

I did it 5 years ago, and it still looks and feels great.

Good luck!

A friend found it here at Advance Auto. Call around or google in your area. It is fantastic. Good for plastic, leather, and vinyl.

I found a Super nice replacement wheel for my '95 off of Ebay for $50 . Looked like it had never been used.

I've also heard good things about wheel skins.

I was looking briefly at it, the image they use is for 94 and up I think. What is the process to do a 93?

Depending on how bad the cracks are, leatherique makes a steering wheel kit. I have used it with great success on my 86. I did a write up on it if you dig through the threads I started.
