Default '64 Coupe with diff storage area

I inherited my father's '64 Coupe which I have been slowly bringing back to life and this forum has been great for learning. I noticed mine has a different storage area than any other one I have seen with the divider between each side. Has anyone seen anything like this where the sides are divided?

also that is not safe at all in a event of a rear end collision. Anything placed back there will be going towards the seats with nothing to slow it down

Nice neat work by Bubba and used for a personal reason of storage etc. Just leave it alone unless you are doing a NCRS restoration. Don't worry about stuff beong pushed forward, the gas tank will take care of all that when you get hit. Just get out of the car. Dennis

The workmanship looks nice, but I wonder why he did this.

Also, what's the "black box" in the driver's side well?

I think the "black box" is an amp for a stereo. Some speaker wires appear to be laying around also. Dennis

Must have been owned by a carpenter-I've seen it all (almost)

You are correct. This car had several options. Remote CB, Stereo Speakers, amplifier, and numerous lights!

I suppose one side could be used for ice and a few 6 packs for a trip to the beach.

Black box in the one side is a Holley Commander 950 fuel injection system for the Lingenfelter built 406 under the hood. It seems they couldn't figure out where else to place the box, so they used that compartment. Then the wire harness couldn't fit through the back plate behind the seat with the cover still on, so I'm guessing that's why they needed to build a new cover....to accommodate everything fitting and being covered. Just guessing. I have uncovered a few surprises trying to get this thing back together. And yeah there are some speaker wires there in the pics too because it also has a custom built box for the rear with a 12" sub and a couple other speakers and amp (removed for now).
