Default Skip Shift?

Does the ZR1 7M have the irritating GM skip shift? If so, can it be deactivated without an aftermarket mod?

No.

Though Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter says it wasn’t always easy pitching an even faster Corvette to GM’s notorious bean counters, the final car has very little compromise – most notably the Aero package means the ZR1 can’t be sold in Europe, and also eschews (thankfully) the silly skip-shift feature and cylinder deactivation, so customers have to eat the gas guzzler tax on this one.

My understanding is the rev matching will also work to and from any gear at any time. Have not experienced it yet myself but supposedly pretty slick.

I can still remember the first time I encountered the notorious skip shift feature or as it is often called (Computer Assisted Gear Shift) or CAGS. As soon as I could I had to buy a skip shift eliminator to get rid of it. Finally a tuner tuned it out of the car. He said "You know how the computer checks the engine temperature to see if the engine is warm enough to activate the skip shift feature. I said I was aware that the engine temperature had to be about 140. He said he know where that figure, 140, was in the computer and he overwrote it to be 300.

Isn't that why owners have to pay a gas guzzler tax? I guess there was no way around it, so why force skip shift on people? Makes sense.

It also doesn't have all the crap in the valvetrain for eco mode. That's worth it to me.

I can remember reading a road test of a Camaro and the Camaro was equipped with the skip shift feature AND buyers were also charged the gas guzzler tax. Which left the tester puzzled thinking it should be a tax OR the skip shift feature but not both.

- GG tax has different levels, I believe. So the skip shift could have been there to prevent a worse tax. Or, perhaps, it was used in the 6-pot Camaros and that carried over to reduce assembly line costs?

If CAGS bothers you, you aren't driving hard enough or not shifting to 2nd before 14 mph when in heavy traffic. Spending more than 1 cent on avoiding it is wasted money when it is so easy to drive around.

I don't know if you ever had a car with CAGS or not. I did and CAGS was just a pain in the rear. I can remember winding out the car in first gear and I was looking at the dash to see when the skip shift light went out so I could shift into second and the car ahead of me stopped unexpectedly and I almost rear ended him. After that episode was when I ordered the skip shift eliminator from LG Motorsports.

I remember they advertised it as being easy to install. Well it was easy to install if you were under the car.
