Default Dealer Having Difficulty Mounting Tire

Brought my 2017 Z06 to the dealer for an oil change and to check a rear tire for a slow air leak this morning.

They found a nail through the sidewall. The bad news is they cannot mount the new tire. The car will have to stay the night.

Anyone know what the problem is mounting a tire?

The good news is I bought the wheel and tire protection plan. At least I am even on that and still have 4 years left on the plan. New tire is $486.

As a side note I asked about the new suspension calibration. They said it is a no cost re-calibration. I told them if it is no cost then go ahead and do it since they will have the car another day. We'll see.

These wide tires are just a **** to bead up. I've had a Chevy dealer turn me away without even trying. Keep pounding air eventually it will pop and bead.

You need/want a special machine to remove/install the tire. If the dealer does not have it, they have to do it manually, which is hard to do and you risk getting your rims damaged.

Dismounting and remounting the tire is the easy part. We are talking about the diffucult part which is trying to get the tire to bead up. Next youll ask why. Why? Because there is so little sidewall.

I had a small tire shop do one wheel and had a hell of a time. The last time I took it to a les Schwab and they had no problem at all. I believe equipment can make a difference. Les Schwab has deep pockets and top of the line equipment at least here in the PNW.

Dealers around here (Mass) wont touch a Z06 wheel - told me bring it somewhere else - lucky to have a tire shop willing to have at these wheels took them quite a bit of time but they got it done

Kenwood Tire in Bridgewater, Ma. did the them

Many dealers don't have the touchless tire machine needed to not damage the rim. If they do, they may not have the talented folks to operate it on a GS/Z06 wide low profile rear tire.

I was using Firestone who has 12 service bays, ~20 techs and only 2 or 3 that can do Vette tires!

The large Chevy/BMW/Mercedes dealer in town brings their wide, low profile run flats to Firestone! It also takes a high flow air compressor and large ID hose to put the air in faster than it leaks out the rim while trying to seat it!

Just had my 2017 GS software upgraded. The dealer cost from GM is $288 and the retail is $325. If they will do yours free have them do it but be sure to check, as when they find out they have to pay it may not be!

Popular topic, but equipment and training are instrumental. I had reservations when needing to replace a rear wheel on my Z, but the Corvette tech made it look easy. Less than 20 w/perfect results, so it definitely can be done... but not by all.

Look up YouTube video for the Hunter Revolution tire mounting machine. It comes very close to mounting tire with no operator, but on Corvette wheels you still have to manually pull the tire over against the wheel to get it to start seating.

Agree, a smaller dealer may not have the right equipment, but most large ones do.

Abel Chevrolet uses that machine. It was down last week. They won’t mount the Corvette tires without that machine.

I would stay away from Discount Tire. They managed to cut the sidewall on one tire, and destroyed the bead on another!

A good chance they do not have the right equipment and or the right people working for them and are going to take your tire/wheel to a tire specialist shop to do the work! (hence the time they keep the car!)

When you get your car back give it a very good look-see. Also if your re calibration goers like mine you might have to do some adjustments on your DIC/ instrument cluster to get back to where you were.

As mine was a Vert I also got a top not locked message. (easy fix)

Your dealer is taking your car to a shop that has the right equipment.

My guess as well! But probably just bringing the tire and wheel!

Not sure where you are but don't forget that McMulkin can do your wheels/tires with no trouble. It's a little over an hour from Bridgewater but at least you know that they'll be done properly without damage.

It's really a factor of the specific machine they use AND the skill of the operator. Yes, the better machines are more automated and "safer", but they're not exactly idiot-proof.

This is why I make the 90 minute drive out to Tire Rack's warehouse in South Bend, IN -- I know those guys can handle it AND that they have top-of-the-line gear.

Had a local "Specialty Sports Car Tire Shop" do 4 tire installation. Took them over 3 hours and all 4 techs to get them installed. Luckily only on small scratch.
Obviously this is not an EZ process.

I put new tires on my ‘14 Z51. Dealer said he had to pull each tire/wheel from the car, put them under a heat lamp to soften the old tires, then the old tires would come off the wheel. Had to do that one at a time for each wheel. Took a few hours but eventually got all four old tires off and the new tires mounted.
