Checking timing mark on balancer
I am helping a friend assemble his small block. He purchased a hodgepodge of parts from different people.
I checked for true TDC and when I put his balancer on the crank I was a little suprised.
If I didn't check this before installing the balancer he would have had a heck of a time starting it and it would have ran like crap.
We made a new mark at true TDC so he is ready to go.
FYI, this balancer must have come off an engine that used a magnetic timing probe.
If anyone would like to know the procedure I used let me know.

At first I thought it might be a damper from a 69 and later with the timing mark moved 10° but that looks like a lot more than 10°.
Didn't the timing mark on a 62-68 8" damper align with the keyway?

But, I had a '78 model truck with a 350 in it. I'm pretty sure that timing mark was almost at 12:00 on the damper.
Doesn't really matter though as long as the new marks are correct.

The timing cover just had the tab in a different location, probably truck. Good that you checked it ! If you have a degree wheel , you should probably mark it for 34 or 36 total whatever you are going to run..

Here is a picture of the timing cover that came with this balancer.
That piece of tubing is a receptical for a magnetic timing probe to eliminate parallax view when setting timing.
