Wrong type of alternator belt?
Hi!
There was last year installed a new alternator belt on my C3 and now it has started to squeel when revving...or at least I think that the sound is coming from it...
You can see that it has started to be worn on the left side...maybe the belt is a wrong model?
I tried some "stop the squeel" spray but that did not work much...the belt only became sticky.

Is it possible that a machine belt was installed rather than an automotive belt?
Most machine belts have numbers like 2L, 3L, 4L or A,B,C,D,E where automotive are something like 15435 or 11A1105
Just a thought

It's possible that the alternator pulley is worn down so that there isn't good belt contact surface.

Take off the belt and make sure the alternator/water pump spins freely.

Hi C,
You say that the belt is worn on the 'left side'.... is it possible that the pulleys the belt runs on aren't properly aligned?
Your first post seems to indicate you included a photo...I don't see it?
Regards,
Alan

Hi C,
What belt needs to be used depends more on what pulleys are installed on the engine than on the year of the engine.
Here's an example from the 71 AIM that illustrates how the proper belts are sourced, located, and routed on the engine.
It all depends on the options on the car that the belts/pulleys operate on the engine.
Regards,
Alan

Pulleys are not aligned properly like Alan said.
I went through this myself.
A support bracket was missing on mine.
This caused tracking problems for the belt.
I wore mine out in no time.
I replaced correct bracket and new belt cured that.
Mine was on a 427 with P/S.
You may be missing the proper bracket if its an engine swap.

I have the same issue. Mine had A/C but removed till I get this car sorted out. Both belts are on same side. I tried adding a belt, crank to water pump but couldn't find one that would work and gave up. My alternator belt is same as you listed. I tried belts from 3 sources all had the same result. I also cleaned up the pulleys with sandpaper which helped for a little while. Alan your car has both belts on one side what belt are you using if you don't mind?

I had the same problem with my 69. I finally went to NAPA with the belt in hand and they helped me find one just and inch or so smaller. The original belt would run out of adjustment before getting tight enough to stop the squeal. It is tough getting over the pulleys but it worked as I now have it tight with adjustment left.
