Oil additives
Has anyone used oil additives such as some of the new anti friction stuff they sell? I'm not talking zink for flat lifters, I thinking stuff like archoil. Is it good for a 1973 engine! What are the pros and cons?

I will say this... when additives are added to oil. You have to assume that it changes the oils properties in some manner. Maybe for the better...maybe not. And if the oil you use along with the additive you have chosen has not been tested...then it is all a guessing game.

some additives are good.
some you can't quantify.
are you talking treatments like slick 50?
or some of the new block soaking type stuff?
what are you after?
years ago my cadillac dealer was offering an engine oil treatment that coats the metal. they even had a warranty.
gas oil makers are going to put in as little as possible to pass whatever standard they adhere to.
i think everyone knows new oil is lacking in zddp stuff.
techron has a good rep in the gm world.

Everytime I change my oil, I add one bottle of STP Oil Treatment to the fresh oil (Lucas 10W30 Hot Rod Oil w/extra zinc). Anyway, I've been doing that since 1970 (48 years ago) and have had ZERO problems with my engines.....

FYI: In the late 1960s the evening news showed a clip about the Houston Police Dept. using a "new synthetic oil".....after 50,000 miles the patrol car engines being tested were disassemble and showed practically no wear/along with the Officers stating that there was a 3-4 mpg increase in City Driving conditions.
(You can guess what happened to the patent after that)

Thanks for all the responses. What I heard is:
On one hand, big oil wants to put in as little as possible to make their product passable, to stay inexpensive. On the other hand, what would these additives have that billion dollar big oil company's don't already know and have in their oil.
Has any body used these? I'm leaning toward just using quality oil and not adding this extra stuff. I was almost sold on "this could be even better for my engine then just plain oil", but why take the chance - right?

I use AMSOIL in my shop. On the older cars with or without catalytic converters. I use the Z-rod oil. I use the 10w-30 and the 20w-50. 1 year/5000 mile oil change interval.
All I am going to say is look at post #50 and 51. I am not here to push anything on you...or sell you anything. Better yet. Call AMSOIL or any oil company and talk with them with your concerns on trying to put the best oil you can in your engine. Because having the best oil you feel will work for you is great...but if the oil filter is ..as some feel...out dated...then it is was it is.

Any oil with an SM designation will work - dino or synthetic. If you have a flat tappet cam, you will need zddp in the oil. Synthetic will provide better protection under hard driving and will extend oil change intervals. No need to use any additional additives if the oil you choose already has them.

I also use Amsoil Z-rod, mainly due to your advice, in my 69 350. Under what condition would you choose to use 20w50 rather than 10w30?
High mileage engine perhaps?
Thanks

other than passing exposure to advertising about
block metal treatments i have no experience or
opinion.
it is enough to worry about zddp and flat tappet cams.
enough to worry about valve seats and no lead
enough to deal with alcohol in gas

I used to use this...but I did not like the short life and quick oil change interval time. I think it is 3 months/3000 miles...the last time I called them and checked.
VS,
YES..I really do not use it that often but on some engines it seems to allow for a bit better oil pressure when it is at operating temps.

Until all of the engines in my garage required synthetic oil, which is obviously recent, I followed the same practice, and yeah, I, too, was doing it since the 70s...…...
