Default OnStar--not so smart driver

I feel like Im being chastised- in the last month the app tells me Ive hard accelerated 1485 times and hard braked 172 times. in 828 miles. Next month I promise to do better- im sure I can get that acceleration number way over 2k. I am disturbed by big brother telling me Im over 80 0.9% of the time

You can opt out of anything doesn’t mean the data isn’t being farmed

Yeah, turn it loose. You aren't enjoying your car enough punching it only twice per mile.

Welcome to the New World.

Thought your post was about the fact that you didn’t like being nagged.

There are 100’s of forums for discussion of living off the grid. Step 1 is getting rid of your smartphone and any other internet-connected device. Step 2 is to not drive a car produced in the last 20 years.

The fact is — if the Man wants to track you, the lack of OnStar is not going to even slow them down.

When I look at my OnStar account I have to pay $5 extra per month to get Smart Driver. I tried it for a couple of months to see what it did and found it to be useless since it wasn't even close when I was hard accelerating or braking at the track.

I don't really care all that much whether they record the data when I am not paying them to do it. It is so far off base it is useless. If somebody wants to build a false story they can make up their own data easier than using OnStar's.

Every month I strive for an overall score of 10 with plenty of excessive everything.

Yep, I looked at my results for the first few months and I had to laugh.

It was indicating that I was doing all of these excessive hard accelerations and braking, but in reality, I thought I was driving like a choirboy during the break-in period. Most of the time I was one of the slower cars on the expressway and was really watching the accelerations and braking.

I figured they had the baselines set for a Chevy Sonic for all of the Onstar feedback. I simply shut it off since I felt it was useless...especially in a Vette.

IIRC some insurance companies offer a discount for SD subscribers.
W/ permission ICs can & do access record of driver behavior if for no other reason than confirm discounted driver really is 'worthy' of discount.

For those it really bothers fix has always been the same, pull the plug.

Years ago I participated in a trial of such a system--now used by some insurance companies. The data was useless and even inaccurate. (Would record me as speeding when I was not, for example.) Its idea of hard acceleration and braking would have required one to drive like a timid senior citizen.

I would never willingly use such a system. So far as I can tell my judgment is far superior to the algorithm it used.

If you port the data over to State Farm they will give you a 5% insurance discount unless they decide to cancel your policy......

I'm sure they know their business but I wonder to what extent harder braking and acceleration is correlated with insurance claims. I guess "harder" drivers do crash more, and that's why they offer this discount.

I would think following distance would be the biggest metric, but perhaps they can deduce that from the number of "oh ****" braking moments you have.

Really what I learned from SmartDriver is that most of my kids' hard driving happens on the way to school first thing in the morning! It shows them all on a map.

When the warranty runs out I will disable Onstar. (good threads on this forum on how to take the circuit board out) But since I never subscribed, Onstar has stopped the nanny nagging me to "push the blue botton" when first starting the car. if records are being kept, and onstar can't get a buck out of me, yet may have to provide my records for free at a court's behest; even those mopes may figure out data storage costs money and stop the storage of non-solicited data from non-subscribing car owners.
