Default Is there a 0W-40 Bulletin for pre 2019's needing covered oil change?

I have a 2017 GS, about to need to get our 3rd oil change done. I asked the local dealer if they have 0W-40 to do this and he said they won't use 0W-40 for anything other than 2019's unless they have a GM Bulletin telling them to do this. He isn't going to accept me copying and sending him the ask Tadge on this!

Is there some official bulletin to dealers?
thanks

There is no official guidance as of yet. All we have is both Mobil 1 and the Corvette Chief Engineer publicly stating that the new 0W-40 ESP oil now used in 19 MY production cars is backward compatible and recommended for all C7 engines back to 2014.

I was afraid that was the answer...maybe just have to do it myself. First two changes at a dealer made me too nervous they would overfill. Kept irritating them by asking them if they knew what they were doing (in a polite way, but still).

I've had no issues in many oil changes having it noted on my service order: "Only fill w/ 9 Quarts and provide the 10th for owner to check level later."

3 different dealers have been happy to comply w/ my instructions, and the level has always been exactly halfway between the dip stick hash marks w/ only 9 quarts.

I'll have to try that line if I have them do it. Just debating if getting the new 0W-40 in the car is worth paying for the oil and doing it myself vs having dealer put the 5W-30 in at GM's expense.

They should give you the 0-40 for free. i just got it in my 2018 stingray at my oil change about a month ago at no cost. I had to literally pull up the bulletin saying its recommended in the corvettes and show him what it was, but after that he did it with no fuss.

Unfortunately, it's been documented here that many dealers will refuse to give you 0W-40 unless you have a 19, the containers are marked, "not for retail sale," and you can't get it anywhere else. It's been a crap shoot as to which dealers will do it, and which will not.

Afraid, nervous? its just oil folks, not the fountain of youth

here is what Mobil told my brother last month about the sanctified unobtainium 0w-40 mobil 1 use in older vettes (when he asked the question while requesting his gimme hat):

From: Mobil Products <mobilproducts@ourdataworks.com>
Date: April 26, 2018 at 10:15:11 AM EDT
To: @yahoo.com
Subject: Re: Free M1 hat and stickers offer
Reply-To: Mobil Products <mobilproducts@ourdataworks.com>

Dave,

So, it's actually the "2019" model year C7 that comes factory filled with our new (to the US) 0W-40. My understanding is that the change was driven by the track day crowd, frustrated with draining a motor full of 5W-30 to run 15W-50 for a day or two, and then immediately drain the 15W-50 to go back to 5W-30 for street use. The 0W-40 is a compromise, which GM feels will hold up to track day use while still being safe for the street.

Honestly, if you're driving only on the street in a pre-2019 model, I don't think you're going to get any extra benefit from the 0W-40, and if pleasure driving includes the occasional road trip, you should see a slightly better fuel range out of the tank.

Thank you for choosing Mobil,
Jim

I'm posting this from the Chevy dealer waiting room. I'm getting my 500 mile oil change right now on my 18 GS and they are putting Mobil 1 0W 40 in it.

Unfortunately, this bulletin only refers to 2019 Chevy and Cadillac models:

The jug? It sounds to me like they are giving you the Euro 0w40 then, because the new ESP 0w40 does not come in 5 quart jugs, it only comes in 1L bottles right now.

There's probably not going to be a bulletin for 14-18 cars until the oil is available at retail. What little they can get their hands on is being kept for the 2019s.

The Bulletin# informing the dealers to use the new oil on all C7's is:

18-NA-129

Have your service department look for it.

Please check the container size before using this new oil, it apparently comes in LITERS, not QUARTS for now. It is supposed to be available in both sizes and probably will be eventually. I had the local dealer order 10 qts. for my 2019 and it came in in liters and the parts people didn't realize it until I pointed it out.
9 liters filled my dry sump up to within an eighth of an inch of the full mark.
With only 26 miles on my z51, the service writer was willing to write me up for a 500 mile oil change and give me the oil and filter, all I had to do was ask!

Like I said, some dealers are more flexible than others, who are very rigid, and very black and white.

Relax, the 5W-30 was good enough for your '14>'18 C7 when it was built it's good enough for it now and going forward.

If you track your C7 frequently I can see your wanting to change to 0W-40 to keep from frequently changing between 5W-30 and 15W-50 on race days.

Somebody keeps claiming that 18-NA-129 tells us about the new oil in older C7's, but I can't find it on the internet and my local dealer, who is quite happy to use the 0W-40 in my 2017 if I request, says they can't find it either.
