Fuel price here just hit over $8.80 per US gallon or $2.35 per litre. Over a dollar per litre is tax and part of that is a tax on a tax because there is a fuel levy (tax) and then gst (government stealer tax) on the whole price:-(
The other rub is that the fuel levy is supposed to pay for roading but the money goes into the government consolidated fund so they can spend it on whatever they like and then they have the cheek to want to impose additional regional fuel levies to pay for specific roading or transport projects.

Thought had crossed my mind a few times, a Ford 1958? with a foldaway hardtop was recently converted to electric here as a promotional vehicle for an electric company using a 170kW bus motor and water cooled inverter, no mention of top speed but it will do 0 - 60 mph in 4.5 secs. Seems sacrilege to get rid of the roar of the V8 though

I know exactly what you're saying. I always figure though that I've got to pay to put fuel in something. The incremental increase for the additional consumption of putting it in something that puts a smile on my face compared to something that bores me to tears has always made the cost easy to justify for me. The older car is also generally much cheaper to own (enthusiast insurance, no depreciation) which further helps to offset the fuel costs.

You know the diesel guys will convert their trucks to run on biodiesel and make the stuff in their backyard. I need to figure out how to do that with high octane gasoline

Gas here in So Cal is approaching $4 a gallon, so I guess I shouldn't complain too much. But even if gas here was $10 a gallon and I only got 15 miles to the gallon, a 50 mile cruise would cost me $35 in gas. That's not really that much to spend for an enjoyable afternoon of top down cruising in an old Corvette. A lot of new cars depreciate that much in one day.

It's fine with me because I'm sure that all the state and federal tax monies collected are being utilized efficiently, and for the betterment of our society.
I love paying taxes..what would I do with all that extra money anyway?

The government here don't care if the price goes up, they are on a green binge to convert us to electric vehicles. At the moment you can get free recharging in towns and EV's don't pay any road user charges to encourage people to switch. Here gasoline users don't pay a seperate road user charge because of the above tax but if you drive a diesel you pay a RUC based on the size of the vehicle, this is about 4c per kilometre for a car.

When Gas was $4+ per gallon here (MN, USA) I looked into making my own Ethanol. Not difficult but smelly and time consuming. There are some good sites on the Web about this.
We're at around $3 for 91 Oct. today
They play the same tax shell game here.
