This looks more like a Vette than a Volkswagen

Almost looks like a Bricklin

There were lots of vw based kit cars in the 70s, 80s

Bricklin was my first thought, too! Used to have a customer with a Bricklin.....felt like a kit car, but had a Ford V8 under the hood. A very quick rattletrap.........with '70's motorhome style interior!

That's the Aquila GT kit car. A fairly rare kit car in the grand scheme of things. Has gull wing doors similar to the Bricklin or DeLorean.

Indeed VW Beetle and "kit car" are near ubiquitous to one another. MANY kit car builders in the 70s used the VW for all kinds of creations during the kit car hey-day. Just like Fiero kit cars there was often too much ambition for buyers and not enough skill or money to finish them.
