Rear wing installation
No its not a golf. BUT, nobody has offered their knowledge about my rear wing installation. DO i have to bolt through the outside through the inside black metal on the inside of the trunk. Any suggestions?

It may help others give advice if we know what kind of wing you are installing? Carbon fiber can be anything. I'm assuming it's an APR wing with metal brackets for pedestals?

Rear wing installation
im installing a $400.00 carbon fiber wing from Southern Car parts. Its legs are aluminum with 4 base mounting 2"x2" at the ends of legs, 2 on each legs basebase. Do I drill through the red outside then through the black metal that covers the entire inside of my hatchback trunk? Or do I have to separate the outside (red outside from black) and put nuts onto bolts between the two pieces. Or just drill from the outside on trunk top through both pieces and use app. 2" bolts and some small piece of flat steal to that will be used to have the 2 leg bracket to. I'm ready to drill through both surfaces and put this wing on. Its just for looks. It think they look so KOOL. Each leg stands 8" tall and 7" at base of the two legs. The wing is 57" wide. Sorry about the paragraph. I just wanted to clarify what I'm ready to drill. Ty all for the help. Trackspeck hood vents next.

I never have done one mounted like that, but post it in the road race section I bet some has some experience with them. Mine goes down though the trunk lid to the frame. It's also 72" across.

If you are going to race, and want to use it at high speed and therefore have a lot of downforce, mount it to the frame, if just for looks on the street, just mount it to the body.

First of all, there is no metal in the entire hatch lid on a base model. It is all SMC (sheet molding compound). The wing I have has pedestals that mount to the deck of the hatch at the corners, just outboard of the inner tub. This way the fasteners coming through hang down in the weather channel between the fender and the inner tub. QTY-2 fasteners mounted forward to aft for each pedestal, and for good measure, I machined a couple net-fit 0.125" T6 aluminum plate stock cleats to spread out the load of the fasteners across a larger area, so at speed they wont pull through, and the fasteners won't crack the composite of the body.
Another thing to consider; 57" is gonna look funny on these cars. It is just plain not wide enough for the back end of a C5. Mine is a 67" wing, and it still doesn't extend all the way to the outter extreme of the rear fenders. Secondly, if your mounting points are somewhere in the middle of the hatch, you have to be aware that the area is actually double wall with an inner hollow space. What you perceive is black metal, is actually thin SMC which adds structural rigidity to the hatch, but is not load bearing.
If it is just a few bolts that hang down, I would drill my holes through the painted top deck, carry through the open space, and come out the other side of the black part. I would then double the diameter of said holes ONLY THROUGH THE BLACK PART. You want to fasten just through the main hatch deck, NOT the empty hollow stuff behind it, or you WILL break the black part. This will allow you ample space to fit a socket through to the material underneath, and good, clean, ROUND holes will not so adversely effect the general integrity of the hatch.
If you are not careful, and just slap this together, you could end up with a floppy d$%k hatch afterwards, or a bunch of cracked stuff, and a wing that comes loose over time repeatedly. Also, if you have too much weight on the hatch, your gas struts will have a hard time holding the hatch when it is completely open, so be aware of that as well.
If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask I have been out of the Corvette world lately, as my wife and I just bought our dream property, and we have been working non-stop on that. 6 acres in the Washington foot hills, with a 3 car attached garage, and a 1200 square foot shop Lots to do, especially when you have to pusher mow an 86,000 squarefoot back yard :{

Ty Eric. I've followed you for awhile. Congratulations about the new home. Think of yard mowing as Cardio. Lol I greatly appreciate your advise. Rick
