The C7 has so many electronics that occasionally weird things happen. I’ve had some strange things happen and after a restart all is well.

Would make you nervous!
Assume you drove how with brut force?
Thought perhaps it was an issue with folks installing a catch can mount and using a ground for both. That has caused electrical issues for some. For most with the failed steering issues that was not the case.

I had the same issues in 2014 and they replaced the electronic steering rack but upon closer inspection it was a actually marked "refurbished". I would make sure you get a new one because mine never acted right after that....seemed to have more "play" than my original.

There's nothing in the warranty that says parts installed under warranty will be new. It only needs to be serviceable, and they just want it to last to the end of the warranty.

I'd have a dealer look at it before doing any road-trips, and this is why... I was about to leave Kerbeck's with my new '17 and the p/s died. No messages, but the tech (brought in on his day off) said it was a not easily accessed sensor. They gave me an identical '18 for the same price and I went on my way. The point is that this stuff is so complex it can be anything on your car from an electronic glitch to who knows what!
That said, I cannot believe the '17 didn't throw a code, but it didn't. Who knows? My C5 glitched within a year after I got it and wouldn't crank... then would. It did the same at the dealership, whose tech said that they, "saw it flash a message for an instant," but not set it, so they couldn't read it. This happened over a single day... I still have the car 16 years later and it hasn't done it since. As I said, who knows?

Happened to me last month on my 14 z51 . I was out of warranty , had to replace electronic steering rack and pinion , $3500 parts and job. That could have been my wide body kit

It's also needed for the coming start/stop! That also requires and electric water pump! Yep the manufacturers have to meet a corporate fleet mpg goal. It's not your mpg they are worried about it's there's!

I would get to the dealer, too. You don't want this to happen when you are "in a situation." I agree w. Avanti. I've lost PS on two cars, not Corvettes. You really have to be aware, and lucky. Come back and tell us what they do to your car to solve the issue.

If you search the Threads from 1 to 2 years ago when there appeared to be a rash of this problem, (or at least posts) you’ll find when it is working after a failure the dealers did noting, found nothing!
Recall one said when it happens again bring it in without shutting it off! Yea, really! There were a number of posts where nothing was found after it worked on restart. No record of the failure recorded in the computer. Probably a supplier issue but there was no recall or GM comment.
A number where it failed and stayed broke had the units replaced, no simple “fix.” You can test how hard it is to steer with it off by purposely stalling the engine. Can be turned but not easy. Would not want a failure while making a turn!
Many cars are going to electric steering. Guess not different than hydraulic power steering that can also fail!

While efficiency is certainly part of the reason, assembly time is a big one. Every time they eliminate mechanical connections (speedo cables, shift cables, hydraulic lines, etc) they make the assembly faster. Way easier to plug in a wire than all that mechanical stuff. Plus, I'll bet there is far less warranty work on the electrical as far as assembly goofs go. Zero worry about adjustments, connections and the like.

Well it wasnt a fluke, took car out and lost P/S within 10 miles.Shut car off and it is fine drove 20 miles never came back on. Called onstar to see if they see a code but I have basic service and my next report is June 6.
Guess it time to have some fun with the dealers who want no part of me cause bought car at Kerbeck 175 miles away.Have only bought new cars since 1990 and have not had problems till car had 100k miles plus,my 1st Chevy hope this isnt going to be a ongoing headache

I really like the electric steering on our C7, but it hasn't died on me either.

Yes
Yes my 2017 had the same issue, went back to the dealer and it was there for 3-days. They had to replace the electronic steering gear assembly and alignment. Knock on wood its all okay, was fully covered under warranty.

You can buy a code reader for <$15 (see an OBDII at Walmart for $14!) If you don't want to buy one AutoZone, Advanced Auto etc have them and will check for nothing!
Would appear from that prior forum input, therefore OnStar could not do it either! That was the problem from the forum reports of the issue. Dealer could not duplicate the problem of find the cause. They were not going to be able to "just replace the unit" on warranty that appears to be the only solution.
Be interested in what your dealer says.

Did you get a "Service Power Steering Please drive carefully" message on your DIC. That's what I got on mine. Then 20 minutes later, it was fine and no message. BUT.... a few hours later, same thing. Dealer found two history codes L056E and a C056D. Then said they whole steering rack needs replacing. It it has been at the dealer since last Thursday, and will probably be there a couple more days.
I posted about it in the tech section and will post the results of the repair there.
