Just wanted some advice. I bought my 17 grand sport used 6 months ago, and it was time for an oil change so I took it to my nearest dealer. I usually do all my oil changes in my past vehicles myself but with the dry sump I didn't want to mess anything up. Also the previous owner said it still had a complimentary oil change left.

So I did some research on the forum and saw a lot of people said don't allow dealer to use anything but mobil 1 full synthetic, which is all I used on my 3 SRT vehicles I used to own. So I bought two 5qt mobil 1 just in case they insisted on using dexos.

so I dropped off vehicle and the service rep told me , yes I had a free oil change left and I insisted only the use of Mobil 1. She checked and said yes that's what they use, and I also requested someone with knowledge of the C7 complete the service , but of course she said, they all do.

I waited outside for the tech to drive my car in the bay just to confirm with him only mobil 1 to be used. He said OK, then him and the service rep came back and said they will use Dexos and its the same as mobil 1, so I told them NO, just use the oil I brought as it's not worth the $50 I paid at walmart to put inferior oil in my car. They performed the service and when I got home I checked the oil and it was over filled by close to a half quart according to the dipstick. And on top of it he scratched the hell out of ther fuse box cover some how!!! I will also not, I did make sure to follow the proper procedure when checking the oil level

Any suggestions on what I should do and is a half qt. In excess oil going to cause any damage? This is why I hate letting the dealer touch my cars. Sorry for ther long rant but any advice would be great. TIA

I don't think you have much to worry about. Still, it's very easy to pull the drain plug and drain some out.

Sorry to hear... all TOOOOOOOO common. Since you are normally a self-changer, drain the extra. You definitely know where NOT to go.

Or use a syringe / turkey baster and suck out 1/2 qt.

Suck it out or drain it out. GM recommends a half quart overfill for tracked cars. It will/did not damage your motor.

So educate me, can you suck out oil from top reservoir fill port/opening? I assume you can from the comments.

It's stories like these which reaffirm that my decision to do my own oil changes (despite getting a bunch of free ones) is the right one. As long as I am physically able to do it, I will never let someone else change my oil for me.

Don't try to suck it out the top with a turkey baster... someone on the forum tried that and a piece dropped in the tank, ended up costing a fortune to disassemble everything to get it out. Just drain from the bottom to be safe.

Nah, easy.... use nylon tubing: go to feed store get large syringe and nylon tubing...

Of course, for a pint of oil I'd just leave it alone....

Go to Amazon and purchase the item linked below for $15. Remove cap from dry sump tank, extract 1/2 qt, and you're done in 5 minutes or less.



If you have the oil changed at a dealer again have them note on your service order to ONLY ADD 9 QUARTS, and provide you with the extra to adjust at home. That's what most of us do, and it's also good practice to leave the level halfway between the max and min marks on the dipstick.

Thanks for the advice guys. I did call the dealer and they told me to bring it up there since they scratched the fuse box cover and they would drain a half quart of oil.

for z51, in the manual, on page 163 - the manual recommends OVERFILLING by 1/2 quart for competitive events and then says to remove the excess after the event so the dipstick reports normally..

In other words, there doesn't seem to be much of a problem overfilling when your car is a dry sump (I dont see if yours is or not).

Yes, but in a "competitive event," you're running high rpms, and the oil is flowing throughout the engine at a much higher volume, so there is no danger of oil burping into the air intake. The reason for taking it out after the event is that you don't want to be puttering around town overfilled at low rpms, which is why the manual says to remove it after the event.

This.. Very simple to do with a fluid transfer hand pump... can get at any Harbor Freight of auto parts store.. pull it straight out of the dry sump tank

Also I would think its not much of an issue since with the dry sump system its pumped into the motor from the tank... so its not like the crank is turning in a normal overfilled oil pan

You sure its not because engines tend to burn more oil at sustained high rpm ?

Turkey baster didn't work on mine. Tube was to big to get all the way down. Used a fluid changer that I used to use for my boat to suck it out. OP I had the same experience with the Service people rolling their eyes at me when I was making sure they knew what they were doing.

A professional combustion engine designer should be run off the lot for designing an engine that needs a 1/2 qt increment. Four five six, I don't care. But 1/2? Makes no sense.
