Default Pilot Sport Cup 2 defective?

Hey guys!
Just posting this to see if any of you with the Sport Cup 2 Tires have seen this?
Car has just about 1500 miles on it and I bought it in May. I took to the dealership today and they have not seen before. They are going to contact Michelin and see what they say. I was just wondering if any of you have seen this? Thanks!

At least they didn’t tell you you must have run over something long and thin...

Ive seen splits in the grooves running the circumfrence of the tire, but not a horizontal line like that. Wonder if it is the seam where the ends of the tire are glued together during manufacturing? What’s your date code?

1116 is the date code on both front tires. Seems odd!

Holy crap.
That tire is not safe. I would be inspecting the others very carefully.

I just looked at my other front tire with the same date code and it is starting to split also... Not as bad! But starting... Yeah, I would not think these would not be safe!

I’ve seen a few tire cracking threads on here due to cold temperatures. Perhaps the damage occurred when it was cold and has gone unnoticed until now.

Yeah I don't think they are. It looks to me like they are coming apart. I also bet Michelin will want both tires back. No big deal for you. I'm sure warranty will cover them. Good eye for noticing that ….

That is where the tread is spliced together when they make the tire. The danger with this tire is the tread could separate from the car and damage the car. The tire won't go flat because it is a run flat and more than likely won't even lose air.

There is a Tire Rack Technical Article on this situation it happens to R compound tires and the Cup2 tire is an R compound tire.

Is this a case of what happens if the tire is driven (or moved in cold temps)? No one said the tire would immediately show cracking.

For sure owc6! I see no where, where it says that... I believe this has to be a manufactured problem. Nothing wrong with my rears... On the the car for the same length of time.

Since you bought the car in May, you have no idea what happened to it before then. I've seen cracks like that developed in ultra-performance summer only tires when some knucklehead drives in 30 degree weather and hits a bump in the road -- the tire can literally crack, and it looks exactly like your photo.

I think owc6 hit the nail on the head. Winter damage to a R-compound summer-only tire.

Official word:

GM bulletin #13-03-10-001A: "Information on Tire Cold Weather Cracking" – (Jan 30, 2014) advises “avoid driving, moving, or test-driving vehicles equipped with high-performance summer-only tires below 20º F as operating at these temperatures can cause damage to the tires.” The car models affected include the 2012-2014 Buick Regal GS, 2014 Cadillac CTS Vsport, 2012-2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and Z/28, 2014-2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE, and the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and Stingray Z51, and SS sedan.

Thanks everyone for the input on these! I have a feeling that Michelin will deny the claim and make the dealership cover the cost.. But we will see. I will keep you posted. Either way, I’m buying the Continental Extreme DW Contacts to replace these.

FWIW, Michelin warranty is 4 years from date of manufacture, and is prorated for wear.

Update on this.. Just got an email that GM won’t cover it. So now it’s between Michelin and my Dealer.
This is going to get very interesting.

Thankfully the dealership did. I'll never own another set of Michelin's again. I had the MPSS with the "death wobble" and Michelin wouldn't even talk to me. Hope what you've experienced isn't the next series of problems.

Here's a thread from the C6 section about the MPSS issues if anyones interested.
