Default Name that tool.

Hey, everyone.

This rode home with me, in one of many boxes of tools that my step-father passed along to me this week as part of a major downsizing effort. It appears to be a special-purpose tool, but I've been unable to figure out exactly what its intended use is. I'm guessing it's to release some sort of spring clamp, but I just don't know:

A web search using the five-digit number (31692) that's stamped into the jaws turned up nothing helpful. There are light serrations on the tips of the jaws.

Anybody here know the answer?

TIA.

Live well,

SJW

Looks like something my Dentist uses in his office.

I considered that, but I don't think that's the intended use. Probably could be used on small ones, but only by reaching across the clamp (parallel to the hose). Thanks for the reply, regardless.

I have a vague recollection of this tool, and might have even used it myself in the distant past. Just can't seem to bring it to mind...

Hmm... Doubtful. I'm pretty well certain that I am the only person who has ever used a piston ring compressor in the driveway at mom's house. Not a ridiculous guess, though, I'd say. Thanks for the reply.

I think the jaws are too far from parallel in order for them to be of much use as hose pinchers, but thanks for the suggestion.

My guess is either a spcial thin jaw version of the ratcheting hose clamp pliers just mentioned by 426 Hemi, or if those are small pins at the ends of the jaws, it might be a ratcheting C-ring plier. But I couldn't find anything that looked exactly like it either. It seems to be designed as a clamp that can reach into a very narrow opening for some specific purpose.

Out of curiosity, did your step father forget what he bought them for? I was thinking some kind of C ring pliers as well.

Looking at 426 Hemi's pic and another Craftsman tool I found on line, I think you may be missing two plastic swivel clamps that snap onto the round projections on the side each prong...

There are three of what might appear to be pins on each of the jaws, but they protrude so minimally that I think it's pretty clear that they're just flat rivets that were used to assemble the jaws. I don't think they'd be of much use functionally.

This is exactly what I've been thinking all along, and I believe it is the case. Thanks for the reply.

He couldn't recall. But, he's 83 years old, and has probably forgotten a couple of other things by now, too. Heaven knows I have! I'd say the odds are that he bought the tool for what turned out to be a one-time use, then stashed it away in a cabinet. That it was stored among a bunch of automotive tools hints that its intended use may have been automotive in nature, but that's far from certain.
