Default 1970 coupe removable top storage

I have searched the threads and still can't seem to figure out how my '70 tops are stored in the rear compartment. The owners manual has what I think is supposed to be an illustration of the storage method at the bottom of page 35 but it is too dark in my reprinted version to see clearly. Does anyone have an original that they can post? '71 is different with the "Y" strap. The '70 has two straps, one on each side with adjustable clasps and clips on the ends. Manual says "Place the panels in the rear stowage compartment against the sides and secure them with the retaining straps".

Thanks. I do have a case, I’m just curios to know how Chevy intended the straps to work.

Take the T-tops off and place them on the floor of the storage compartment exactly like they are placed on the top. Tie them down with the 3-point strap system. Drive on...

Is is better for the tops to be placed into individual (vinyl) storage bags, but not absolutely necessary. If you don't put them in bags (or a special case), some protection on the underside of the straps/buckles would be a good idea.

Generally, you don't drive far enough with them off to go to the trouble of storage. If the weather is not assured of being rain-free, I just don't take them off. If weather is good, I just leave them at home.

I see you have a '71 which has the three point strap. Appears that the '70 is different, it has two straps that I can't seem to make sense of. Illustration in manual is fuzzy. It would be great if someone with an original '70 could give some feedback.

I had a '68 with 3-point strap, also. I think you might be missing one of the sections of strap or some of the hardware.

is that the way they are supposed to go?
i've always placed them on top of each other in the vinyl bags then tied down with the "Y" harness strap in my 72.
always seemed funny as there was then a lot of wasted space for putting other things back there...

It make sense that they would be the same from 68 on but don’t understand why my 70 has the two adjustable straps with clips or hooks at each end and not the “Y” strap. It also doesn’t have the center loop for the Y strap to attach.
Going to pay attention to other ‘70s I see at Carlisle this year.

more than likely it was ripped out or just missing when someone removed carpet to clean

My '70, a June build, does not have the center loop/fastener for the straps, nor was one ever fastened to the bird cage between the seats.

That said the straps are missing from my car altogether.

Default More information on tie down straps configuration

I went to the assembly manuals for '68, '70, and '71.

'68 and '70 are the same
Note how the roof panels are oriented.

'71 used the "Y" strap

In a '70, the roof panels are placed in the rear at about 45 degree angles. One at each side. You place the roof panel in the 45 degree position enough to expose the connector on the floor. Connect the strap to the floor connector and tighten the strap to secure the top.
See the pictures below, the straps are connected correctly. Just that the roof panels are not there.

Didn't even realize the hooks were there. Mystery solved. Thanks!
