65 horn button stand question
During the restoration I installed all new parts while putting the steering column back together. Of course the horn button stand is a reproduction part.
after installing the column and mounting the steering column horn assebly, I notice the horn goes off just by pulling or pushing on the steering wheel itself, the horn button doesn’t work.
i pulled the horn button off and the mounting ring that is attached to the contact ring came apart. There’s 3 little plastic tabs that hold it on. I reattached it and put everything back together. Tried it again and same thing.
is this an adjustment problem? Is this adjustment made at the column spring near the steering gear?
i purchased another horn button stand and want to know before this new one gets messed up.
thanks!

Sounds like you got a defective horn contact the plastic rivets hold it together and acts as a insulator so it’s doesn’t ground it self out

New contact is installed without the button and horn still goes off with just pushing in the steering wheel

If you do a search on here with the member 65GGvert about horn contact and grounding I know he wrote many of post on how to diagnose and repair it. Your main harnes and it’s grounds has nothing to do with it. The black horn wire in the turn single switch harnes may have a rub through and causing it. If your rag joint ground strap is broke. Or you might have something assembled wrong.

I contacted 65GGvert and we've been going back and forth through email the last few days. I ended up replacing the horn stand and horn contact (brush). We have now narrowed it down to something wrong in the horn stand area. I pulled everything off down to the turn signal switch and was able to ground the ring to the shaft; and horns went off. After installing the hub, wheel and horn stand back on; i'm getting nothing. As 65GGvert asked me to do, i tried grounding the horn stand and brush to column shaft and nothing.
Here are some photos of me disassembling the top of the column. Does anyone see anything I'm doing wrong or am I missing any parts? Should I clean the paint off where the horn stand/steering wheel mounts to the hub?

the only thing I see is your missing the external star washers under the screws for the horn contact

Yes those three screws. But I don’t know if they will help your problem

Have you checked the wiring in the steering column?

What specifically do you mean? I grounded the gold ring on the turn signal switch to the steering shaft and horns did work. Thanks

Did you try what I suggested via our emails yesterday by using a screwdriver and shorting the fingered part to the metal part with three screws?

If the horn blows when shorting the gold ring to ground, but not when shorting the springy part that holds the cap, your horn button/spring ***'y isn't touching either the gold ring or the "ell" sticking down on the part with three screws, one or the other. That other springy thing that drops down in the hole in the hub should be partially compressed by the "ell" when installed to make contact on both ends. I'm using these terms because so many different terms are used interchangeably and they shouldn't be. Horn button, horn cap, horn spring, horn stand, horn contact, etc.

Yes I have and horns don’t go off, could the issue be that I’m not torquing the nut down far enough that holds the hub/horn brush assembly down on the shaft?

All I can tell you is, both ends of that spring contact down in the hole have to be making solid contact. When you tighten the three screws on the top, the "ell" should compress the spring so that it firmly touches both ends.
