Default 55 stamp pad

Any comments from the pundits about this one on a 55?

Someone sanded the top one but i'd venture a guess they're both real.

Not being an expert on C1s I am not sure about this, but I thought partial VIN derivatives did not start on Corvette engine stamp pads until 1960?

The engine code I understand, but ........

Edit - never mind, those are the engine sequence numbers. My bad!

At the top of the top pad there appears to be broach marks that are parallel with the crank which is a good thing. Just for my knowledge is that the vin number along with the engine number. Did not know they did that on the early cars.

only one letter will determine if this is a corvette pad and that is the G. The spacing and letters on the F55F look identical to the typical corvette pad. The G is not the typical G. G is spaced closer to the F and this G is rounder than the typical G used when stamping the FG code. Look at the spacing and shape of the G on the other pad that you posted and you will see a difference. Do a search on 55 FG pads that have been posted in the past. The NCRS site also has quite a few 55 FG pads.

Steve has survivor car #29 that has the typical F55FG gang stamp.

note the spacing between the F and G and the shape of the G

I think of it as the round "G" vs the oval "G". The oval G is what you want to see.

1955 and 1956 Chevroley engines used a sequence number, which was stamped at the engine plant. Number started at 0000001 and went until they finished production for that year.

There is a rough correlation between the increase in the sequence number and the date code of the engine.CHEVY V-8 ENGINE PLANT STAMP FORMAT The Chevrolet engine plant stamp format has changed somewhat over the years, but it provides a wealth of information for those who know how to read it. All 1955 and most 1956 Chevy V-8 engines used an engine plant stamp format like the following: 0I04563F56FG which breaks down to: 0I04563 = the sequence number of the engine F = the engine plant (Flint, Michigan) 56 = model year of engine production G = engine suffix code Late in the 1956 model year, Chevrolet changed the format of the engine plant stamp. The revised format for 1956 simply deleted the engine sequence number, so the format would look like ‘F56G’. The format was changed again for the 1957 model year. The new format has been used on all Chevrolet V-8 engines through 1991. The new format is: T02I4IT which breaks down to: T = the engine plant (Tonowanda, New York) 02I4 = engine assembly date (Feb. 14th) IT = engine suffix code Notes: 1. Leading zeros for the engine assembly month were not used from 1957 to mid January of 1960. The actual date of change appears to be between Friday January 15, 1960 and Monday January 18, 1960. 2. The letter 'I' is used in place of the digit '1' in pad stamps, except for the VIN derivative stamp.

The picture in post one right above the F55FG, there appears to be broach marks coming straight down from the head into the F55FG number and so on.
