Default Oil filter bypass adapter needed?

When converting (1966, 327, 300hp, base) from the canister filter to a spin on filter, do I need both the Mr. Gasket oil filter adapter AND the oil filter bypass kit? Or do I just use the spin on adapter alone?

I have one of these brand new I will sell. It is NAPA 4061. Have Filter as well, NAPA 1601. Retail is $49, sell for $30, both in original boxes. This is what you need for conversion to spin on . email me: kc@reagan.com

Thanks for the offer, but I have already purchased the spin on adapter. Just don't know if I also need the bypass adapter.

Yes, you do need the bypass valve adapter.

When adding a spin-on adapter to a 56-67 block, you MUST, repeat, MUST use the filter/bypass adapter that was used on 56-67 blocks.
Below is a comparison of the 56-67 style (left) filter/bypass adapter and the 68-later adapter.

The oil filter pocket in 56-67 and 68-later blocks is totally different and the 56-67 and 68-later style filter adapters DO NOT INTERCHANGE!
When adding the spin-on filter adapter to a 56-67 block---------------------------NOTHING CHANGES!!!! The spin-on adapter simply replaces the original style canister. It is also necessary to use the square O-ring between the spin-on adapter and the filter pocket.

This picture shows the oil filter pocket in a 56-67 block.

This shows the pocket in a 68-later block. Also, both blocks use different size bolts for the factory adapter.

If you have what is pictured above, (2 pieces), you only need the top piece. The bottom piece is for 68 and up blocks. Just remove the 2 existing bolts and put the piece at the top of this picture against the existing piece. Make sure that you remove the old square cut o-ring and replace it with the one in the kit. The new adapter fits up against that o-ring. Then put everything together and bolt it up. The kit should come with a threaded hollow stud. You screw that into the new adapter. That is what the screw on oil filter screws onto.

A couple of years ago I fixed a big block for a friend. He paid top dollar for the car. When they built the engine they didn't install the felt piece between the original piece and the adapter. Thus what ever oil was in the filter just rode there. It didn't filter any oil. Listen to what you were told. you MUST use both the adapter and the original piece.

So I want to make sure I get this right. If my oil filter pocket looks like the top picture, all I would need is the spin on adapter, but if my oil pocket looks like the middle picture, then I would need the bypass adapter (last picture) and the spin on adapter? (66, 327, 300hp)

To the OP, your 66 should already have the bypass in there. Google "converting to spin on filter Chevy small block". Watch the video.

I'm going to try this one more time----------------------------no one seems to understand it.
IF THE ENGINE BLOCK IS A 56-67, AND A SPIN-ON FILTER IS ADDED, THEN THE FACTORY OIL FILTER ADAPTER (for a canister type filter) MUST BE RETAINED, AS BELOW!

To use a spin-on filter on 56-67 blocks, the below FACTORY adapter is retained, the aftermarket spin-on adapter is added, including the square O-ring that is used when installing a new filter cartridge in a canister filter can. Thus, FOR 56-67 BLOCKS, THE FACTORY ADAPTER IS USED, A SQUARE O-RING AND AFTERMARKET SPIN ADAPTER.

IF THE BLOCK IS A 68-LATER, A SPIN-ON ADAPTER IS NOT, repeat, NOT USED BECAUSE THE 68-LATER BLOCKS WERE CHANGED TO ONLY USE A SPIN-ON FILTER.
Below is the factory oil filter adapter (ONLY THING USED ON 68-LATER BLOCKS) that was used on ALL 68-later blocks for a spin-on filter. The oil filter pocket for 68-later blocks was cast/machined totally different than the filter pocket for 56-67 blocks.
THE BELOW 68-LATER ADAPTER IS NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT USED ON A 56-67 BLOCK WITH A SPIN-ON ADAPTER!!!!!

I do not know how to explain/illustrate it any better!

My 67 427 block did not have the factory piece in there. Where do I find it for sale? My block is just empty recess I added the filter adapter but do not have any factory insert. What should I do? Where do I get the factory insert?

They make new parts the replace the bypass valve. I just go to EBay and buy a factory pre 68 fitting.

All of the Corvette & Chevrolet parts vendors have them. Ebay too.

I know everyone is trying to say the same thing, but I've already changed my 60 over and reading these posts is confusing as hell. Specially with others coming in with thelr own questions. And saying the same thing again with dark capital letters and repeating words doesn't make it one bit clearer.

Here's a short pictorial instruction set:

I have a 1968 427 CE block with spin on filter in my 1966 Corvette. Can this be converted to a canister filter, and if so, what is needed? I would like it to look correct? Thanks.

Never tried to go back the other way. But, I suppose it is possible if the threads that are down deep in the oil filter pocket are there for the long bolt that goes through the filter canister.
Also, you will need the 56-67 style filter adapter/bypass. AND, as long as the 56-67 canister (you will need a 58-67 version of the canister, 56-7 is longer) will seal on the square O-ring, it should work. You will just have to give it a try.
