Default Leave C7Z idling - lock car and take fob with you

Is it possible to leave the car idling — leave the car - lock it with the fob. Can this be done if you want to make a quick stop at The grocery store.

I think you can but
Not a good idea! My computer programmer friend said thieves have hacked the fobs and to get a little pouch that protects it from copy.

They now can copy the radio waves from your fob make a new one and drive off with your car.

yes , I have heard about that. It seems they can do this whether or not you leave the car idling. Even if your sitting in the car with it idling and fob in your pocket or laying on console.

Gizpo, recommend you leave the car idling with the key fob in it, ideally in the ghetto...then you can finally be rid of a car that so disapponts you.

its a manual transmission. I didn’t think they can drive sticks in the ghetto. And c6z06’s are faster then c7z06’s.

Wouldn't checking that theory yourself be better & less time than it took to post here?

From what I have read on the net the only time that your fob code can be picked up is when it's transmitting, so let your car lock itself as your walking away.

I know that the doors will unlock automatically when you get within a few feet of the car with the fob in your pocket but not from across the street as when pressing the button, so maybe GM set the fob up that way so that someone across the street will most likely not be able to pickup the fob's short range transmission.

I think the manual says you can set up “Remote Starting” ? I haven’t done this but have thought about trying it. So if it will start while locked it should work by taking your Fob with you.

Why would you want to do this?

Yes, it will lock the car. I do this when I want to keep the car cool while I make a quick stop. It shuts itself off after about 15 minutes though.

It seems to me if a car has proximity unlocking the Fob must be transmitting all the time. Supposedly the emissions can be picked up by somebody in your yard with the key in the house.

yep just tried it as you describe for about 5 minutes.

While on in my driveway I unlocked the car left the fob at the house and drove away. Went about a mile it seemed fine and came back. I guess driving it the car would eventually shut down after 15 minutes as well.

Most close range RFID fobs and cards do not passively transmit, rather, a signal is continuously sent from the reader and the reader picks up the signature of the encoded fob. Long range RFID such as those used for parking garage access (up to 75ft) have their own power source just like your corvette fob.

If you drive the car without the fob it will never just automatically shut off it's a safety issue. It will run if someone is driving it or until you run out of gas or shut it off. Basically it won't shut the car off if someone's driving due to safety losing steering control and brake control and crashing into something

it is quite odd / the car can operate for long distances without the fob.

My car won’t let me open the door if the car is running! Guess I need to break out the manual...

Push button start cars and keyless fob have been around for a long time my 08 M3 had push start it's an old safety rule that they can't shut off the car while you're driving it fob or no fob
