Default Emission Question

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c6-corvettes-for-sale/4154719-2006-modded-corvette-convertible-a6-approx-22-miles.html

Hi eveyone.
New member, and soon to be 1st time vet owner.
Working with another member on finalizing the sale of the attached vet.

He is in Iowa where emissions testing is not required and I live in CT where it is required.

I'm working with him to take it to a local shop for emissions testing anyway.

Wanted to see if folks think I might have any problems.

Wife would kill me if I bought a car I couldn't even register.

Thanks in adance for the comments/advice.

Granted that you not in CA where every after market part would require a CARB# to pass emission, but would check with with your areas smog inspection to see what is required for the inspections.

The car has high flow cats, so if the tune is good, should be able to pass a sniffer test if the cam is not too wild.

Myself, would pass on the deal, since the 112 supercharger is dated since it will not put out a lot of pressure, and the Current TVS-2300 is a better super charger isntead.
Hence the reason your seeing the 112 super charger and cam, was the super charger was pretty much maxed out in power, and the cam added to get more power isntead.

With a TVS-2300, it will produce upwards of 28lbs of boost if desired on a LS engine, so no need for a cam to hit the 650+ hp on a OEM motor; that you really want to limit a stock motor (bottom end) to isntead with a roots blower.

So right now, the motor is making 615hp, but do not see any mods to either the trans or diff to hold the increased HP isntead.
Hence before you play the increased motor power game, you have to play the increased drive line game to hold the increased HP first instead.

Thanks Dano

Hoping someone would comment.

Did a little more research on the emissions thing and looks like the cam is the biggest factor that may effect it.

I'm looking to have it tested at a shop to make sure it passes even though in Iowa it isn't required.

Thanks for your other thoughts, I had some similiar thoughts on the drive train but I figured since the 7.0 puts out close to that HP that it would be able to take it once in a while, not looking to do hit it hard all the time.

Looking forward to your comments.

Z06 runs a TR6060 trans (rated at upwards of 800hp), plus the diff on it is stronger to begin with too (rated at close to that as well).

Thanks Dano

Just getting my feet wet in the vet world.

Do you know if those trannys are interchangeable if something were ti happen to the original.

Just so you know not totally done deal but I did put down a deposit.
Really thought for what I paid 24K it wasn't a bad deal.
In my research most standard C6's with low miles 23K were going for about this money.

Thoughts. Am I making a big mistake.

Hard to say, until I saw the Carfax and Gm service history reports to start with, as well the PPI report as well.
Truth is, without seeing any of these to start with, would have not even talked price, or put a deposit down on the car.

As for the car, cam swap means that your going to be in the motor more often doing valve spring replacement every 30K, and checking the roller lifters and cam as well, plus that fact that is running the older S/C, and not a TVS-2300 isntead.
Hence car only has 24K miles on it, but if the S/C and cam was done way back to the car in the beginning, may be close to due for replacement valve springs now.

Hell what real surprised me, and with the 112 S/C putting out close to it max boost to start with, there is not a meth kit installed on the car. Hence after a hit or two from the the S/C, the motor is going to heat soak, and will have less power on further hits.

Hence the TVS 2300 not only puts out more pressure, but more volume too, so it does not heat soak the motor as fast when it used alone to make the 650hp range.
Also does not list a E85 upgrade on the car, so this means that you will need to be running 96+ octane full time as well. Hence another nice option with a meth kit, since its a mix of 50/50 water and meth, does not only help cooling boost hit after boost hit, but allow you to run 93 for cruising, and the meth kit will kick in the the Meth mix under boost to hold the octane rating of the fuel higher to prevent detonation.

Simply put, the 112 S/C is really the turn off from me, since it does not put out the needed volume/pressure to begin with to hit the 650hp mark on its own, and that a cam was adding in to help the motor make more power. Stock cam and the valves springs/roller lifters are good for well over 100K before you have to start checking them. Drop a cam in, and its a 30K thing that you should be replacing the valve spring, and checking the cam lobs and roller lifters instead.

Then the fact that you have 615HP being put through a base trans and diff with no upgrades, that is scary too.

Hell, to knit pick even farther, car has over an extra hundred lbs in the front end with the S/C weight, and no mention if the front spring was changed from a FE1 to FE3 spring for the extra front end weight. The fact that is got a 19"F/20" rear rims and tires (narrow body widths and mix match of tire brands front to back to boot), but and still running the stock Jl9 brakes, just another bewildering item as well.

Myself, the car would not been my pick to buy in any way, and would have just picked up a bone-stone Z06 isntead. Hence I don't own a vet for show, but for "GO" since it's used for high speed road course work instead.

Default Great Review

Thanks Dano

I started to get second thoughts about the car and had concerns that after getting back to my home state of CT I would have problems passing emissions as well as overall concerns with the durability and robustness of the car.

1st vet and got pumped on the HP for the price.
Live and learn, only cost me 250 buck deposit.

For me the best bet is continuing to look for the car I wanted originally, a stock C6 convertible, w LS3 motor, z51 pack, and 6spd manual.
Hoping to find one for under 25K.

What do you think, better plan for the daily driver too.

Took me 6 months of looking, before I found my last vet to buy. Hence ran across a few that where candidates, but did not pass the Carfax/GM service history and PPI reports to warrant buying them.

The convertible with Z51 option is going to be the hard one to find, but they are out there if you keep your eyes open.
Hence the Z51 cars where factory autocross built cars, and without the roll over protection on the convertibles, it was not really a feature that most autocross racers would want when ordering a z51 option car instead. So it was really the convertible DD cruiser type buyer, that just ordered the Z51 option package, instead of say F55, that your trying to find instead.

Also, the Z51 option was not expensive of an option to start with ($2K), but is going to cost you about $4K more over a base model on a used vet, since its that much of a desired feature in the first place.

Thanks Dano for all the great advice.

I can see you are very knowlegeable about vets.

May pass on the next one I get serious about to you to get your input.

On this forum is there a way to send a message to one person.

Would be nice if menu had a how forum works page to navigate all options.

Be good and thanks again.

Regarding any C6 you look at at, you might want to check with your local authority as to what kind of emissions testing they do in CT. In TX, 1996 and newer emissions testing is done via OBD II. So as long as there are no thrown emissions codes, then you are good to go.

We do the same type of check for 1996 or newer.

Before 1996 they do a sniff test.

The hunt for my 1st vet continues.

Thanks for all the help.

Thanks Dano good to know.

If you run across any nice convertibles with LS3 let me know.

I check the sight daily.
